{"id":313606,"date":"2025-11-25T22:40:14","date_gmt":"2025-11-25T22:40:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/313606\/"},"modified":"2025-11-25T22:40:14","modified_gmt":"2025-11-25T22:40:14","slug":"dolton-mom-turned-away-from-hospital-during-labor-calls-for-changes-to-maternal-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/313606\/","title":{"rendered":"Dolton mom turned away from hospital during labor calls for changes to maternal health"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Dolton mother says she is still processing the trauma of delivering her baby in a truck on the side of the road, just days after staff at a northwest Indiana hospital told her to leave.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter being kicked out of the hospital and begging to stay but still being pushed away was hurtful, disgraceful,\u201d Mercedes Wells told reporters Tuesday. \u201cI felt unheard. I felt ignored. I felt treated less than human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She was joined by U.S. Rep. Robin Kelly, who said she plans to file a bill to make sure what happened to Wells does not happen again to anyone else.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s clear that Mercedes\u2019 story isn\u2019t an isolated incident,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cThis is not a Franciscan Health problem but rather a systemic issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes Wells and her husband Leon Wells were traveling in northwest Indiana Nov. 16 when she went into labor a couple of weeks before her due date. She delivered her daughter, Alena, inside a truck on the side of the road eight minutes after they left the hospital.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff at that hospital were so cold toward me and my family,\u201d Mercedes Wells said. \u201cI don\u2019t want anyone else to have to experience that during a time when they should be happy and overjoyed bringing a life into this world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mercedes Wells, now a mother of four, said the nurse ignored her, and the doctor on call never came to see her.<\/p>\n<p>The doctor and nurse who were directly involved in Wells\u2019 case were fired from Franciscan Health, the hospital\u2019s president and chief executive, Raymond Grady, announced shortly after the incident. She was discharged a few days later.<\/p>\n<p>Kelly\u2019s bill, the WELLS act, stands for Women\u2019s Expansion for Learning and Labor Safety. <\/p>\n<p>Kelly said the bill, if it becomes law, will push hospitals and birthing centers to develop and follow safe discharge plans. The bill also addresses systemic issues in maternal care, racial disparities and hospital accountability, she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur health care system is broken.
