{"id":313904,"date":"2025-11-26T01:54:09","date_gmt":"2025-11-26T01:54:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/313904\/"},"modified":"2025-11-26T01:54:09","modified_gmt":"2025-11-26T01:54:09","slug":"guggenheim-abu-dhabi-will-include-titans-like-basquiat-and-warhol","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/313904\/","title":{"rendered":"Guggenheim Abu Dhabi Will Include Titans Like Basquiat and Warhol"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/guggenheim-abu-dhabi\/\" id=\"auto-tag_guggenheim-abu-dhabi\" data-tag=\"guggenheim-abu-dhabi\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guggenheim Abu Dhabi<\/a>, set to open in 2026, will present giants from the Western tradition, such as Jean-Michel Basquiat, Jackson Pollock, Mark Rothko, and Andy Warhol, alongside lesser-known contemporary artists from regions as far-flung as Asia, Africa, and the Arab world, the chairman of Abu Dhabi\u2019s department of cultural tourism said at a recent briefing that for the first time revealed what would be on view in the long-awaited museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThey\u2019re going to be within that collection, but right next to them, you\u2019ll have amazing contemporary artists that maybe, unfortunately, the vast public don\u2019t know much about,\u201d said Mohamed Khalifa Al Mubarak, promising that the new institution would be \u201ca lot more than a museum,\u201d per a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/arts-culture\/art-design\/2025\/11\/21\/first-details-of-guggenheim-abu-dhabis-collection-global-museum\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> in the National. \u201cIt\u2019s really a civic space. The new Guggenheim outpost (adding to locations in New York, Venice, and Bilbao) joins the Louvre Abu Dhabi, which opened its doors in 2017; the Natural History Museum, which opened earlier this year; and the Zayed National Museum, which opens next month. On the commercial side of the ledger, the longstanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/market\/abu-dhabi-art-2025-scene-frieze-sales-1234763435\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Abu Dhabi Art fair<\/a> has expanded recently and will next year become part of the Frieze franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt has been a long road to the new museum, as the Guggenheim announced plans for the Gulf museum some two decades ago. It was originally to open in 2012, before the opening was pushed back to 2017 and then, amidst further delays, some of which were due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to 2022\u201323.\u00a0(Several artists also signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-in-america\/features\/artists-curators-boycott-guggenheims-human-rights-violations-58183\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">public letter<\/a> in 2011 drawing concerns about the project\u2019s alleged human rights violations.) <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe collection, which will span from the 1960s to today, is \u201ctruly global,\u201d said Al Mubarak, and will highlight under-recognized artists. \u201cIt was imperative for us when we were assembling that collection that it focuses on contemporary artists who have not been given the light they deserve, whether it\u2019s because of their geographical location or their gender,\u201d he said. \u201cWe want to be unbiased in that.\u201d He also promises that Indigenous art will be \u201chighly, highly focused.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAl Mubarak described the planning as looking to the future, saying, \u201cAs much as possible, we\u2019ve looked to think about, what does the 22nd-century museum look like?\u201d That will include using augmented reality and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWe\u2019re using AR and AI in some cases and human storytelling of course,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t want a visitor at the Guggenheim to come and say \u2018this is a beautiful Warhol,\u2019 with a little panel that tells them this Warhol was painted at this time and that\u2019s it, thank you very much. That\u2019s easy, that\u2019s boring. What I want to know is, what was Warhol thinking at the specific time? Where was he living?
