After operating at the highest physical and mental levels imaginable, and collecting more than a few injuries along the way, he\u2019s built a training philosophy that has nothing to do with aesthetics and everything to do with long-term resilience. For Shipley, the goal is a body that carries you through life, whether you\u2019re 22 or 72.<br data-node-id=\"1.5\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">His approach is simple: train hard, train smart, and prioritise movements that matter. It is kinder on the back, especially for lifters with long torsos, as it allows for a more upright chest. Plus, it still builds serious full-body strength. Shipley considers 10 reps a minimum and 20 or more as &#8216;elite&#8217;. After a major shoulder surgery left him unable even to hang from a bar, he rebuilt his strength slowly. Today, he performs sets of 20 to 25 reps.<\/p>\n<p><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"walking lunges\" title=\"walking lunges\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1890\" height=\"1417\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/reverse-lunge-1593615558.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"20\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">On a long brutal leg day, Shipley says he includes lots of heavy lunges. He uses around 35kg in each hand and he combines these with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a735581\/barbell-bulgarian-split-squat1\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/how-tos\/a735581\/barbell-bulgarian-split-squat1\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Bulgarian split squats\" data-node-id=\"20.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bulgarian split squats<\/a>, belt squats and high-rep <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a62540656\/unilateral-exercises\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/uk\/building-muscle\/a62540656\/unilateral-exercises\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"single-leg work\" data-node-id=\"20.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">single-leg work<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img draggable=\"true\" alt=\"carry\" title=\"carry\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"4800\" height=\"4800\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/heavy-farmer-s-carry-with-rings-64da3207cbe98.jpg\" class=\"css-0 e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"24\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Shipley uses a bodyweight guideline for farmer&#8217;s carries: carry half your bodyweight in each hand and walk as far as possible. For Shipley, power is just as important as strength. He performs 40-50 metre sprints at the start of the session to prime fast-twitch fibres.
