Maybe because it ate one of its own planets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"b75948c9-e49d-4ebc-a79a-f5b103f79cd9\">The red giant star Kepler-56 has a really weird spin, and it may be because it consumed one of its planets.<\/p>\n<p>Kepler-56 already has two known <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/17738-exoplanets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">exoplanets<\/a>, but they may have had a long-lost sibling, Takato Tokuno, a doctoral student in the Department of Astronomy at the University of Tokyo, concluded after analyzing the star&#8217;s peculiar properties.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" data-url=\"\" href=\"\" target=\"_blank\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"b75948c9-e49d-4ebc-a79a-f5b103f79cd9-2\">One strange quality of Kepler-56 is that its outer envelope is spinning incredibly rapidly \u2014 about 10 times faster than is typical for <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22471-red-giant-stars.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">red giant stars<\/a>. On top of that, the star&#8217;s core is misaligned with its outer envelope, with their spins pointing in different directions. It would be as if Earth&#8217;s crust were spinning much faster and in a different direction than its mantle.<\/p>\n<p>Best picks for you<\/p>\n<p id=\"0d687105-8fa0-4497-827f-4f5198953f26\">What could possibly cause that?<\/p>\n<p>The simplest explanation is that the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26177-star-eats-alien-planets-kepler56-aas224.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26177-star-eats-alien-planets-kepler56-aas224.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">known exoplanets are to blame<\/a>. Big planets can tug on their parent stars, just as <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> causes the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/58-the-sun-formation-facts-and-characteristics.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sun<\/a> to wobble. Planets can also raise tides on their stars. They&#8217;re not very big tides, but it doesn&#8217;t take much \u2014 just a little tug here and there, repeated countless times over millions of years, can spin up a star&#8217;s outer atmosphere. And if the planets aren&#8217;t lined up with the star&#8217;s spin, it can cause misalignments.<\/p>\n<p>But Tokuno realized that this scenario isn&#8217;t realistic, because it would require a very efficient ability for planets to raise rides and transfer rotational energy to the star \u2014 orders of magnitude more efficient than seen in other systems.<\/p>\n<p>So maybe the star just got hungry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"newsletter-form__strapline\">Breaking space news, the latest updates on rocket launches, skywatching events and more!<\/p>\n<p>When a star engulfs a planet, it affects the rotation of the star. Imagine if a <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-hit-earth-what-can-we-do-about-it\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/asteroid-hit-earth-what-can-we-do-about-it\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">giant meteor were to hit Earth<\/a> with a glancing blow. We would absorb the energy of that impact and speed up in the process. And if the planet struck the star at an odd angle, it could also cause the misalignment between Kepler-56&#8217;s core and atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>In a new <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2510.25680\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/2510.25680\" referrerpolicy=\"no-referrer-when-downgrade\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">paper<\/a> uploaded to the preprint server arXiv Oct. 29, Tokuno calculated that for this scenario to work, the doomed planet had to weigh somewhere between half the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18392-how-big-is-jupiter.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/18392-how-big-is-jupiter.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">mass of Jupiter<\/a> and twice its mass, and just before the impact, it would have to have an orbital period of between one and six days. That&#8217;s exactly in line with typical &#8220;hot Jupiter&#8221; exoplanets that are presumably on their way to sharing a similar fate.<\/p>\n<p>There is another possibility: that this star was simply born with a high spin rate, Tokuno wrote in the paper, which has not been peer-reviewed. But that still doesn&#8217;t explain the misalignment between the core and the atmosphere. And it raises another question: Why was the star spinning so fast when it was born? One plausible explanation is that the star ate a planet, but while at a young age instead of near the end of its life.<\/p>\n<p>Astronomers are just beginning to scratch the surface of the complex, and sometimes violent, relationships between planets and their parent <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/57-stars-formation-classification-and-constellations.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stars<\/a>.
