LOUIS POST-DISPATCH. Relative to other recipients, the Cardinals’ cut is “expected to be among the lowest.” The team is eligible for a top-six pick in the upcoming MLB Draft Lottery because they “will be classified as a ‘payee.’” On MLB’s official site, the Cardinals are “listed as a ‘revenue-sharing recipient,’ though the classifications are labeled ‘preliminary.’” Finalized classifications are “planned for as soon as next Tuesday when payrolls calculations are complete.” Primarily due to a second losing season in three years, the Cardinals “experienced a precipitous drop in ticket sales this past season.” They fell from seventh overall in average ticket sales per game to 19th, at 27,777. The team’s overall tickets dropped 21.6% to 2.3 million. Their ticket sales have dropped 30.6% since the 3.2 million sold in 2023. Their season-ticket base has “also been trimmed.” The Cardinals had to “rework their broadcast-rights deal” a year ago with partner FanDuel Sports Network at a rate reduced by 23%, or about $17.3M, for this past season. The Cardinals remain on that renegotiated contract and are set with the same broadcast partner for 2027. In exchange for their top starter, the Cardinals received two young Ps in Richard Fitts and Brandon Clarke. A source noted that the team will cover $20M of Gray’s salary for 2026. The remainder of Gray’s contract did “not line up with the Cardinals’ timetable for contending,” but gaining Fitts’ five seasons of control and Clarke’s six “was appealing.” So much so, the millions sent to Boston are “effectively an investment their cost-controlled contributions.” The Cardinals continue to seek a trade that will send 3B Nolan Arenado elsewhere.
