According to CNN<\/a>, the suspected shooter is believed to have immigrated from Afghanistan to Washington in August of 2021. <\/p>\nThe name of the alleged shooter has not been released, nor has any possible motives. <\/p>\n
The guardsmen were performing \u201chigh visibility patrols\u201d when they were shot, according to police officials, who added the suspected shooter was \u201csubdued\u201d and taken into custody.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt appears to be a lone gunman that raised a firearm and ambushed these members of the National Guard,\u201d said Jeffrey Carroll, an executive assistant D.C. police chief, adding that it was not clear whether one of the guard members or a law enforcement officer shot the suspect.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt this point we have no other suspects,\u201d Carroll said at a news conference.<\/p>\n
The Washington, D.C. mayor described the attack as a \u201ctargeted shooting.\u201d<\/p>\n
At last check, the two were critically injured. <\/p>\n
Following the shooting, President Donald Trump has asked for 500 more National Guard troops to be deployed to D.C. <\/p>\n
Nearly 2,200 troops currently are assigned to the joint task force operating in the city, according to the government\u2019s latest update.<\/p>\n
