The Boston Red Sox were recently linked<\/a> to free agent catcher J.T. Realmuto by Ken Rosenthal and Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic<\/a>. However, not everyone\u2019s having it.<\/p>\n

One MLB writer who doesn\u2019t see the logic behind a potential Realmuto-Red Sox union is Bleacher Report\u2019s Kerry Miller, who gave the Realmuto rumor an 8.3 out of 10 \u201cBS meter\u201d ranking in new piece<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy? Just\u2026why?\u201d Miller wrote of the Realmuto-Red Sox link. \u201cThe Red Sox have plenty of needs this offseason. First base and third base are big ones for sure. Arguably second base, too. Middle relief would be nice. One more back-of-the-rotation starter certainly wouldn\u2019t hurt.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they don\u2019t need, though, is another catcher,\u201d Miller asserted. \u201cConnor Wong and Carlos Narv\u00e1ez will cost them a combined sum of a little more than $2 million in 2026, and both are under team control through at least 2028. And though Wong had a rough go in 2025, they\u2019ve already tendered him a contract and believe he can bounce back to the .280 hitter he was in 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd after increasing payroll considerably with the acquisition of Sonny Gray, can they honestly justify disregarding at least one of their actual needs to instead sign Realmuto to what would be an eight-figure salary as the third catcher on the roster?\u201d Miller added. \u201cMaybe it makes sense to get Realmuto\u2019s right-handed bat into that lineup if he\u2019s trying to make a late-career switch from catcher to first base? However, there\u2019s been no indication that\u2019s the motivation for their pursuit.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2025, the three-time All-Star Realmuto logged 132 games behind the plate, blending veteran savvy with timely bursts of production that kept the team competitive into October. <\/p>\n

Realmuto\u2019s bat settled into a .257\/ .315\/ .384\/ .700 line across 550 plate appearances, yielding 12 homers and 52 RBI while swiping eight bags, modest totals that belied a scorching midseason stretch from June to August, where he slashed .313\/.358\/.460 with six long balls and a 128 wRC+. <\/p>\n

Defensively, his arm remained a weapon, topping charts in caught stealing, though framing woes persisted at -9 runs, the third-worst among qualifiers.<\/p>\n
