It is accessed via a small, dirt road that winds around the preserve.<\/p>\n<p>It was built to serve as a family home for a local builder, who had worked with the architects on earlier projects.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273869 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_32-852x696.jpg\" alt=\"Home with one slanted side\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1931\"  \/>The property has a rectangular plan with one slanted side<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our client, Joe Quinn, wanted to build a home for his family here that would foster their love for beach walks, kayaking, and living within nature,&#8221; said New York-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.desaichia.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Desai Chia Architecture<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To design the home, the team took inspiration from the native osprey birds that are ubiquitous in the area \u2013 their nests appearing in trees and atop piers and telephone poles.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273872 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_4-852x1136.jpg\" alt=\"Desai Chia-designed house with an angled roof\" width=\"1773\" height=\"2364\"  \/>Angled roof forms were informed by a careful sunlight analysis<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Their marine nature, adaptability and high nesting places inspired the home&#8217;s materiality, organisation and relationship with the coast,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>Rising two levels, the house has a rectangular plan with one slanted side.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273875 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_22-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Kitchen in the Desai Chia-designed house\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The layout follows the local tradition of &#8220;upside-down&#8221; houses<\/p>\n<p>Angled roof forms were informed by a careful sunlight analysis. Taking cues from nautical forms, the home extends toward the water in a way that resembles a ship&#8217;s bow.<\/p>\n<p>The exterior is wrapped in vertical cypress siding that was charred using the Shou Sugi ban technique, producing a colour that is similar to driftwood found on the beach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273877 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_29-852x679.jpg\" alt=\"Bedroom within Osprey House\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1883\"  \/>Osprey House extends towards the water<\/p>\n<p>The cladding took cues from &#8220;bird blind&#8221; observation towers in the preserve, which are designed to blend with the surroundings.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The camouflaging effect minimises visual disruptions for neighbours on the coast and encourages wildlife to occupy the lot, while allowing occupants to inconspicuously observe nature from a perch embedded in the landscape,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273879 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_33-852x487.jpg\" alt=\"Desai Chia-designed living room\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1352\"  \/>The material palette is earthy and restrained<\/p>\n<p>Inside the 3,700-square-foot (344-square-metre) house, the studio created airy rooms and a fluid layout.<\/p>\n<p>The layout follows the local tradition of &#8220;upside-down&#8221; houses, which place social spaces on the upper floor.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273881 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_11-1-852x682.jpg\" alt=\"Covered terrace\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1891\"  \/>An open-concept living space leads onto the covered terrace<\/p>\n<p>In the Osprey House, the upper level holds an open-concept space for cooking, eating and living, which adjoins a covered terrace.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This offers the raised gathering spaces expansive open views of the marshland ecosystem, and gentle light from the north and east,&#8221; the team said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/2019\/06\/21\/shou-sugi-ban-house-debbie-kropf-hamptons-long-island\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"191\" height=\"191\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/shou-sugi-ban-house-debbie-kropf-architecture-hotel-hamptons-long-island-new-york-usa_dezeen_2364_sq.jpeg\" class=\"excludeLightbox wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" data-pin-nopin=\"true\"  \/><\/p>\n<p> Japanese-influenced Shou Sugi Ban House provides a wellness retreat in the Hamptons\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a><\/p>\n<p>This upper floor also has a media room and a primary bedroom suite.<\/p>\n<p>The ground level holds three bedrooms, a family room and a covered terrace, along with an entry vestibule and a carport. Tall beach grass on the exterior helps ensure privacy.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2273878 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/osprey-house-desai-chia-architecture_dezeen_2364_col_16-852x852.jpg\" alt=\"Chunky white oak staircase\" width=\"2364\" height=\"2364\"  \/>White oak was used for a chunky staircase<\/p>\n<p>The material palette is earthy and restrained.<\/p>\n<p>The same charred cypress used on the exterior is found indoors, where it adds &#8220;warmth and texture&#8221;.
