True to form, Maxton Hall doesn\u2019t let Ruby Bell (Harriet Herbig-Matten<\/a>) and James Beaufort\u2019s (Damian Hardung<\/a>) happiness<\/a> last long. The young couple\u2019s romance<\/a> is still going strong in Season 2\u2019s finale, despite all of Mortimer\u2019s (Fedja van Hu\u00eat) attempts to destroy Ruby\u2019s life. She decides that staying with James is worth it \u2014 and then the Beaufort patriarch delivers his most devastating blow yet.<\/p>\n Mortimer\u2019s scheme gets Ruby suspended from Maxton Hall, putting her dream of attending Oxford University in jeopardy. \u201cI think in that moment she doesn\u2019t know what\u2019s happening at all,\u201d Herbig-Matten told Swooon of that shocking ending. \u201cI think there are a lot of questions in her head at that moment and a lot of emotions and feelings, and her losing everything she ever wanted is like the worst thing ever.\u201d<\/p>\n When Mortimer goes through James\u2019 phone in Episode 5, he finds the photo that his son took in Season 1, when James and Ruby were still enemies. It makes Ruby look like she\u2019s in a compromising position with Mr. Sutton (Eidin Jalali), the teacher that Lydia (Sonja Wei\u00dfer) is having an affair with. Sutton is ready to come clean about his relationship with Lydia, so he tells the school board in the finale, thinking they already know his lover\u2019s identity. What he doesn\u2019t know is that Mortimer has framed Ruby instead.<\/p>\n Gordon Muehle \/ Amazon MGM Studios<\/p>\n When the accusation is hurled at her, does Ruby even consider exposing Lydia\u2019s secret? \u201cI think that\u2019s the positive thing about Ruby, that she would never do that, and she would never call her out,\u201d Herbig-Matten said, before joking with Hardung that maybe Ruby should have. \u201cLydia should do that. But no, I really like that character trait of [Ruby], that she\u2019s not doing that.\u201d<\/p>\n Hardung noted that James never expected his father to go as far as he did, especially after Mortimer was vulnerable about grieving his late wife. \u201cI think, especially after Episode 5, with his father breaking down, he thought maybe there\u2019s some human aspect to it, so I don\u2019t think he expected any of it at all,\u201d Hardung said. \u201cAnd now with [Ruby\u2019s] whole dream being burned down by his dad, it\u2019s a good setup for another season, I\u2019d say.\u201d<\/p>\n When the Season 2 finale occurs, James and Ruby are ready to stop running, which is the reason they made their romance public to their classmates and Mortimer earlier in the season<\/a>. In terms of the latter, \u201cthey feel comfortable facing the devil because it\u2019s about them trying to build a future for themselves and together,\u201d Hardung explained.<\/p>\n However, Ruby still doesn\u2019t know that James took the photo, so will that revelation cause a rift between the couple, despite their relationship being in a good spot? \u201cI think we\u2019re in a beautiful position of like\u2026 Having had Save Me<\/a>, Save You<\/a>,\u201d the actor said, referring to Mona Kasten\u2019s Maxton Hall books<\/a>, \u201cthey\u2019ve really fought for each other and fought for the love that they deserve, so it\u2019s a perfect spot for the third, Save Us.
