{"id":318432,"date":"2025-11-28T10:31:23","date_gmt":"2025-11-28T10:31:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/318432\/"},"modified":"2025-11-28T10:31:23","modified_gmt":"2025-11-28T10:31:23","slug":"mexico-reveals-314-petaflop-supercomputer-named-after-aztec-goddess-sciencealert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/318432\/","title":{"rendered":"Mexico Reveals 314-Petaflop Supercomputer Named After Aztec Goddess : ScienceAlert"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Mexican government will build a supercomputer with a processing capacity seven times greater than the current most powerful computer in Latin America, officials responsible for the project said Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Named Coatlicue, after <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/C%C5%8D%C4%81tl%C4%ABcue\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a goddess in Aztec mythology<\/a> representing the source of power and life, the computer will have a processing capacity of 314 petaflops.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want it to be a public supercomputer, a supercomputer for the people,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/mexico-supercomputer-coatlicue-sheinbaum-f57bed10440f0fe0825139d7d792b9fb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">President Claudia Sheinbaum told reporters<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/the-worlds-most-advanced-microchip-has-been-unveiled\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The &#8216;World&#8217;s Most Advanced Microchip&#8217; Has Been Unveiled<\/a><\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/china-s-latest-56-qubit-computer-marks-another-quantum-milestone\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">global race is underway<\/a> to build <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/worlds-first-human-brain-scale-supercomputer-will-go-online-in-2024\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">ever-faster supercomputers<\/a> to work in conjunction with AI systems.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/us-supercomputer-is-ranked-fastest-in-the-world-after-breaking-exascale-barrier\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">United States currently leads the field<\/a> but Europe and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-in-japan-are-about-to-build-a-supercomputer-like-no-other\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Japan<\/a> also have models in the top 10, <a href=\"https:\/\/hpc.apacciooutlook.com\/vendors\/top-hpc-companies.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to an industry ranking of high-performance computing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/Three-Dimensional-Simulation-of-Exotic-Supernova-642x631.jpg\" alt=\"computerised image of an exotic supernova\" width=\"642\" height=\"631\" class=\"wp-image-183499 size-medium\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-3d-model-of-an-exotic-supernova-only-took-5-million-hours-to-make\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Researchers used powerful supercomputers in 2023<\/a> to complete the first ever high-definition, 3D hydrodynamic simulation of exotic supernovae.
