Irish actress and Celebrity Traitors player Ruth Codd<\/a> has undergone a second leg amputation. The 29-year-old is currently recovering from the surgery. On Nov. 26, she posted a video on TikTok in which she said she is at her parents\u2019 place recovering from the operation. \u201cGood news, we\u2019ve had a full-circle moment. I\u2019m back making TikTok content in my parents\u2019 house. Bad news, I can\u2019t do it upstairs because I\u2019ve just had my second below-knee amputation,\u201d Codd said.\u201cThere\u2019s a lot to unpack for everyone involved,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

Ruth Codd\u2019s journey<\/p>\n

Codd had her right leg amputated at the age of 23 because of a soccer injury she sustained at 15. The injury she suffered while playing soccer did not heal, and years later she had to undergo a below-knee amputation as a result. \u201cI got injured at 15, and I didn\u2019t get my leg amputated until I was 23. So, those eight years were operation after operation, and sometimes they kind of worked for a while, and then I\u2019d end up back on crutches,\u201d Codd told Teen Vogue in 2022. \u201cAt that age, you think you\u2019re unstoppable, and it was a lot of having to learn a bit too young that sometimes life doesn\u2019t really work out the way you thought it would.\u201d She also spoke about how the physical challenges turned her into a stronger person. \u201cBut I wouldn\u2019t change it. It made me a really resilient person. I\u2019m thankful for just being able to do simple things like walk around or go on a bike or ride my horse. It teaches you not to take things for granted,\u201d she said. She spoke about how her life \u201creally kind of took a turn\u201d after she had her right leg amputated. In fact, she described it as the \u201cbest thing I ever did.\u201d \u201cI spent so many years trying to flog a dead horse, essentially, and having every operation under the sun,\u201d she explained. \u201cAnd I was so scared of this one thing happening. Then, when it happened, I was like, \u2018Oh.\u2019 But I got through it and I\u2019m fine \u2014 still here. The first step I remember taking on my prosthetic leg, the first thing I said was, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s not sore anymore.\u2019 I didn\u2019t even realise how much pain I was in all the time. I had just got used to it,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Representation matters<\/p>\n

Ruth Codd has been vocal about how disability is portrayed in mainstream media. She rose to fame on TikTok, which led to her role in Netflix\u2019s The Midnight Club, produced by The Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan. She played the role of Anya, an amputee with a terminal illness. \u201cYou don\u2019t get a lot of disabled representation in media nowadays. A lot of times, we\u2019re forgotten about. When we are represented, we\u2019re either this kind of saintly little thing that didn\u2019t deserve for this to happen to her or you\u2019re portrayed as bitter. \u2026 Whereas Anya, she\u2019s just human, and the emphasis is on her character and not so much her disability. She\u2019s a firecracker \u2014 really ballsy and funny,\u201d she said.
