Dr. Arjun Sabharwal highlights crucial tests like eGFR, Cystatin C, urine dipstick, and protein-to-creatinine ratio to assess kidney health. Early detection through these simple tests is vital for effective treatment and improved outcomes. Consult a nephrologist if abnormalities are found. Kidney diseases are on the rise. A recent study published in The Lancet found a drastic increase in the number of people with kidney disease. The figures rose from 78 million people with the disease in 1990 to 788 million in 2023. Chronic kidney disease is now the ninth leading cause of death. Keeping the kidneys safe is crucial, and some simple tests can reveal your kidney health. In a video shared on Instagram, Dr Arjun Sabharwal, a nephrologist trained at DY Patil School of Medicine, Mumbai, and the Royal College of Physicians, UK, has highlighted some tests that can help rule out kidney disease. Remember, early diagnosis can improve treatment options and their outcomes. Let’s take a look at the kidney function tests.

Creatinine blood test & eGFR

Your kidneys filter waste from the blood. The easiest way to estimate how well they are doing this is via the blood creatinine test and the eGFR. “Creatinine alone is just a number. eGFR tells how much the kidneys are working,” the doctor said. eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) provides the percentage of your kidney function.

Cystatin C

Cystatin C is a protein produced by the cells in your body. When the kidneys work well, the cystatin C levels in your blood will be normal. However, when the kidney suffers, the level of cystatin C goes up, according to the National Kidney Foundation. “If you work out, take supplements, have a lot of muscle, or use creatinine, then creatinine can be misleading. That’s where cystatin C can provide a more accurate measure of your kidney health,” the doctor said.

Urine dipstick test

Before your kidney function starts to decline, your body will give you signs. This can manifest as leakage of protein into the urine. A simple urine dipstick can detect such leaks. According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, this test is quick. The healthcare provider will place a strip of chemically treated paper, called a dipstick, into the urine sample. The dipstick changes colour if albumin is present in the urine.

Urine protein-to-creatinine ratio

According to the nephrologist, a urine protein-creatinine ratio (UPCR) test looks at how much protein is leaking from the kidney into your urine. Higher-than-average levels may be a sign of a kidney-related issue. This test is done by collecting the urine sample and then analysing its protein-to-creatinine ratio.

Bottom line

Once these test results come back and indicate abnormalities, you must book an appointment. Follow this simple rule: if urine PCR is raised, creatinine is increasing, or there is blood in the dipstick, see a nephrologist. “Diet, turmeric milk, detox, and home remedies won’t work here,” Dr Sabharwal emphasised.Note: The information provided in this article is for educational purposes only and is not intended as medical advice.
