Fox Sports NFL \u201cinsider\u201d Jay Glazer takes a break from breaking news and championing mental health awareness for some Q&A with Post columnist Steve Serby:<\/p>\n
Q: How did the term scoopage begin?<\/p>\n
A: (Laugh) I think I created it just to piss off [Michael] Strahan and the rest of my friends. No other reason.<\/p>\n
Q: Some of your favorite scoopages?<\/p>\n
A: Getting the Spygate video. That was my second week in studio at Fox. Before that, I was doing all my scoopage from a game when I was doing sidelines. Howie Long just points at me and he\u2019s just kinda like, \u201cYou\u2019re telling me he has the actual video?\u201d And Jimmy [Johnson] looks at me and he goes, \u201cYou really got it?\u201d And then Terry [Bradshaw] turns his head around to me, and he lets out this loud whistle. \u201cHe\u2019s OK with me!\u201d From then on, man, I was part of the crew. That\u2019s a tough locker room to crack.<\/p>\n
Q: Some of your other favorite scoopages?<\/p>\n
A: I had [Raiders center] Barret Robbins the night before the [2003] Super Bowl leaving, and he\u2019s gonna get deactivated the next day. I had all the BALCO players. Then I had the second Spygate when they [Patriots] were spying on allegedly the Bengals. Then I had [Brett] Favre coming out of retirement to join the Vikings, which was unheard of. Then I had on Week 1 of Jim Harbaugh\u2019s last year in San Francisco, I came on TV and I said, \u201cNo matter what happens this year, even if they win the Super Bowl, Jim Harbaugh will not be back as head coach of the 49ers,\u201d and he was gone halfway through that year, whenever it was. Last year, at our Super Bowl, everybody reported the Jets haven\u2019t made a decision on Aaron Rodgers yet and planned to discuss it the following week. I came on TV and said, \u201cNot only have they made a decision \u2014 Aaron flew to the Jets facility on Thursday, on his own plane, and they told him in the first minutes, \u2018You\u2019re out. We\u2019re moving on.\u2019 \u201d That\u2019s probably the biggest story you could have on a Super Bowl pregame show \u2019cause everybody has everything, you know? And that was after everybody else did their news, so that was a really good one.<\/p>\n
Had when Randy Moss got traded back to the Vikings from the Patriots. \u2026 The Jets were looking to trade Keyshawn Johnson when everybody said there\u2019s no way. I got killed for that one. The Giants going to trade Odell Beckham [Jr.]. I got destroyed for that one. I got the scoop the same way \u2014 teams are calling me. \u201cHey, man, how would he fit with our head coach? With our culture? What\u2019s the issues here?\u201d I had a Lions game where I said Brett Favre called the Lions to give up all the secrets that the Packers do. That was a good one. \u2026 Two Thanksgivings ago I said on our pregame show that Wink [Martindale] wouldn\u2019t be back as Giants DC no matter what and people lost their minds. That was a crazy one.<\/p>\n
Q: You were one of the first minute-by-minute sports breaking news guys in the \u201990s.<\/p>\n
A: It was me versus Len Pasquarelli, Chris Mortensen and John Clayton. Back then, you could break stuff and you had it, right? Now it\u2019s whoever can tweet the fastest. Or if you break something, a second later, everybody else tweets it. I\u2019ve kinda changed my job a little bit, is to make sure on Sundays I come on and have something that nobody knows. You can hear it only from me.<\/p>\n
Q: Is it a fun job or a pressure-packed job or both?<\/p>\n
A: It\u2019s both. I had at 4:30 in the morning that Aaron Rodgers wasn\u2019t playing [last week against the Bears]. And I said, \u201cMan, do I tweet it?\u201d I don\u2019t work for Elon Musk, you know? I work for Fox. So I\u2019m gonna hold it and hope that it waits for our early show, which is \u201cFox NFL Kickoff,\u201d and it got out 10 minutes before I went on. I hold it for 4\u00b9\/\u2082 hours. So that\u2019s pressure. Same thing happened a few weeks earlier, I was waiting to come on to say that, I was hoping to surprise the world that Brandon Graham\u2019s coming out of retirement and he\u2019d re-sign with the Eagles the next day. And I think eight minutes before our show, it got out. And I held it for a week. Those things are pressure-filled.<\/p>\n

Q: Who are the hot assistant coaches who could be up for head coaching jobs?<\/p>\n
A: Of all these coaches Sean McVay\u2019s had, he\u2019s shown [Rams DC] Chris Shula step by step of that job more than these other assistants he\u2019s had. Love him, love [Colts DC] Lou Anarumo. Would do wonders with those [Giants] pass rushers. \u2026 [Broncos DC] Vance Joseph. Vance is a presence of stability that he just keeps everybody in the building calm. Mike McCarthy \u2014 there\u2019s not a lot of quarterback developers out there, and Mike is one of \u2019em. What he could do with a guy like Jaxson Dart? Wow! He gives them like instant stability. He knows how to build a winner. The sky\u2019s not gonna fall under him.<\/p>\n
[Steelers OC] Arthur Smith is another coach who is really good with quarterbacks. Look what he did with Justin Fields. Look what he did with Ryan Tannehill. Him and Aaron I think have been fantastic. He and Dart would be tremendous together. I think Matt Nagy will get another shot. [McVay offensive assistants] Mike LaFleur and Dave Ragone. \u2026 Spags [Chiefs DC Steve Spagnuolo] too, right? [Packers DC] Jeff Hafley does a really good job of bonding with players.<\/p>\n
Q: Is Giants GM Joe Schoen safe?<\/p>\n
A: As of right now, yeah. I don\u2019t see any of these guys coming in demanding, \u201cI want to bring this personnel guy in, that personnel guy in.\u201d And Joe\u2019s an easy guy to get along with. Very.<\/p>\n
Q: Thoughts on Mike Kafka?<\/p>\n
A: I actually like Kafka a lot. I love that he put his foot down with [Abdul] Carter.<\/p>\n
Q: Does he have a chance to be the Giants head coach?<\/p>\n
A: If they go on some crazy run. \u2026 I don\u2019t know if they\u2019re gonna go on a crazy run or not.<\/p>\n
Q: Surprising teams or storylines this season?<\/p>\n
A: I wasn\u2019t surprised by Denver. I\u2019m surprised by the Chiefs\u2019 struggles, I\u2019m surprised by the Ravens\u2019 struggles. I thought this was gonna be the Ravens\u2019 year by far. I definitely wasn\u2019t surprised by the Rams, I thought they were gonna be a juggernaut. I think [Seahawks GM] John Schneider is the best GM in the league. I didn\u2019t know they were gonna be this tough this fast. I think Dallas is kinda surprising you now what they\u2019re potentially turning into.<\/p>\n
Q: If you had to pick a Super Bowl matchup \u2026<\/p>\n
A: Right now, I will probably say Rams-Broncos.<\/p>\n

Q: Whatever comes to mind: Shedeur Sanders?<\/p>\n
A: I\u2019m pumped to see what he could do.<\/p>\n
Q: Jaxson Dart?<\/p>\n
A: (Laugh) They need to protect him from getting himself killed. But they got him, [Malik] Nabers and [Cam Skattebo] \u2014 what they have now is an identity, which they didn\u2019t have for a long time. Plus, those defensive guys, they got an identity over there. Whoever comes in now, they got an identity now.<\/p>\n
Q: Myles Garrett?<\/p>\n
A: Unstoppable.<\/p>\n
Q: Aaron Rodgers?<\/p>\n
A: I trained with Aaron this offseason. A freak of nature. Pissed me off \u2019cause his old ass blowing past me doing stuff. He don\u2019t train like a 41-year-old.<\/p>\n
Q: Matthew Stafford?<\/p>\n
A: Damn near perfect this year.<\/p>\n
Q: Drake Maye?<\/p>\n
A: He surprised me. I always tell guys when I\u2019m talking to \u2019em coming out of college, I\u2019m like, \u201cHey, you guys only have like say four hours a day or whatever to work on your craft. Now that you have 24, who do you want to become?\u201d And, Drake Maye\u2019s used those extra 20 hours to become exactly what they were hoping for. When he came out, they thought he had limitations on his game. Which clearly he doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n
Q: Caleb Williams?<\/p>\n
A: Ben Johnson\u2019s the best thing to ever happen to him. \u2019Cause he had to learn how to be a quarterback, and not just a gunslinger.<\/p>\n
Q: Mike Vrabel?<\/p>\n
A: Phenomenal coach. I think guys like Vrabel, Dan Campbell, Mike Tomlin, Sean McVay \u2014 you can\u2019t beat guys down anymore like [Bill] Belichick used to. \u2019Cause guys get beat down so much on social media. Guys like Vrabel will build you up. Sean McVay, who makes you feel like you matter. Dan Campbell was like the type of protective big brother that everyone wishes they have. That\u2019s why those guys worked out.<\/p>\n
Q: Do you think Mike Tomlin will stay with the Steelers?<\/p>\n
A: We gotta see how the season plays out.<\/p>\n

Q: Why did you and Strahan bond?<\/p>\n
A: Before I finally got a job covering the Giants in \u201993, I was interning at WFAN, I was doing standup comedy, I was boxing, I was bouncing \u2014 I was doing everything I could. I finally got a job for this rinky-dink Giants newspaper, which went Chapter 11 shortly before I got hired, so I wasn\u2019t making any money there. That first week I walked into the Giant locker room, I\u2019m like, \u201cHow can I be different?\u201d One thing I can be different, is I can outwork the world. Like I am relentless. If everybody here works 40 hours a week, I\u2019m gonna work 100. Trying to be great is very lonely, and it\u2019s the amount of hours you put in when no one\u2019s watching. I felt the reporters back then were using their pen as a weapon. You weren\u2019t allowed to have relationships with anybody. I didn\u2019t take myself seriously, I\u2019m not covering the Middle East, I\u2019m just covering sports. I was getting killed by the reporters for having relationships.<\/p>\n
Stray got drafted to pretty much replace Lawrence Taylor, and Lawrence is still on the team. He and I just latched on to each other. We actually saw this executive with the Giants try and hop a fence, and he caught his shorts on it and he fell over and hit his face and rolled all the way down, he sat up and he had this big piece of sod on his head and it looked like the cartoon with birds are flying over his head, and no one was laughing because he was a powerful guy, except me and my baby sister [Strahan] over there. We were freakin dying! So afterwards, he\u2019s like, \u201cOhmigod, thank God you were laughing!\u201d<\/p>\n
I\u2019ve gone from broke to unbreakable. The first 11 years of my career, the only money I could count on each year was nine grand from the New York Post, and 450 bucks from New York One TV. I didn\u2019t have enough money to take a subway to a bus from New York City to Giants Stadium back and forth every day \u2014 Strahan literally drove me back from Giants Stadium back to the city every single day of my life from \u201993 to \u201999. So I joke I owe him like 28 grand in Lincoln Tunnel fare. If it wasn\u2019t for him, I wouldn\u2019t be here now. I wouldn\u2019t have been able to do my job, I just couldn\u2019t afford it.<\/p>\n
Q: Did you call Strahan your baby sister?<\/p>\n
A: I call him my baby sister \u2019cause it drives him crazy, absolutely. We\u2019re like the Hansons from \u201cSlap Shot\u201d \u2014 we fight over everything the way brothers do. But the truth is he\u2019s the best friend I\u2019ve ever had in my life. Five years ago he said something that changed my life forever. I didn\u2019t tell him or anybody about my mental health stuff until I wrote my book \u201cUnbreakable: How I Turned My Depression and Anxiety Into Motivation and You Can Too\u201d (2022). He and I were supposed to go to dinner one night. I go and talk to teams now about mental health. And this is the story I think that really changed their viewpoint when I tell them to open up to their teammates. \u201cYou got 53 therapists sitting in this room right next to you. Open up to them.\u201d<\/p>\n
One night, I had a really bad mental health meltdown, man. I call it the beast getting out of the box. When it happens, I just don\u2019t feel it mentally, I feel it physically, too. I feel pain in the left side of my gut. I feel it behind my rib cage like I\u2019m having a heart attack, and I feel it in my joints like I\u2019m in a 50-round in the rain. I told Stray, he was gonna come pick me up, I said, \u201cHey dude, I can\u2019t go out tonight, the beast got out of the box.\u201d That was the first time I ever told him in 30 years. And he\u2019s like, \u201cOh man, you all right? You want me to come over?\u201d And I wasn\u2019t expecting that. I said, \u201cI don\u2019t, I just want to sleep this one off.\u201d He goes, \u201cDo you want to talk about it?\u201d And I didn\u2019t expect that. And I said, \u201cI do, but not tonight. I gotta sleep this one off, it\u2019s hurting me a lot, like I\u2019m in a lot of pain.\u201d And he said, \u201cWhy have you never told me? I drove you back from New York City every day. Why have you never told me? You had help sitting right next to you.\u201d I said, \u201cI don\u2019t make the rules of this, Stray. I felt ashamed. You\u2019re my best friend.\u201d And he said something that changed my life forever. He said, \u201cBy you not telling me, you took away my chance to be your best friend for 30 years.\u201d<\/p>\n
Think about how powerful that is. Like I thought I was gonna be a burden. And he\u2019s like, \u201cNo, man, it would have made us closer.\u201d Trust me, I do now. I\u2019m getting choked up as I tell you about it \u2019cause it changed my life, and I realize like people really do want to be there for us, and it\u2019s on us to open up and tell them. We shouldn\u2019t suffer in silence. They want to be there for us. By me opening up, man, it\u2019s turned friendships into brothers and sisters. This story has been instrumental when I talk to teams to show them your teammates want to be there for you and how much closer you\u2019ll be for leaning into them.<\/p>\n

Q: When did you realize that your depression and anxiety was really beginning?<\/p>\n
A: When I was about 4. \u2026 It\u2019s every day of my life. I went to bed every day of my life struggling. I woke up every day of my life struggling. It helped me create this big personality to hide the pain. That big personality\u2019s what ends up getting me hired. I was diagnosed at an early age \u2014 clinical depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar, last year I got diagnosed with something called OCD anxiety. Other than that I\u2019m a model of stability. \u2026 I\u2019ve been on over 30 meds and none of \u2019em have worked, so I\u2019ve gotta try other things. But when I go and talk about it now, I try to talk about turning my mental health into my mental wealth, and I look to go, \u201cOK, where did each one of these things benefit me? Where do I weaponize \u2019em?\u201d And if I weaponize \u2019em in my life, then I\u2019m not ashamed by \u2019em anymore. I could be proud of \u2019em.<\/p>\n
For example, my depression told me I was worthless. So I didn\u2019t know how to feel love from the inside out. So it motivated me to do all these great things to get love from the outside in and hope they meet in the middle somewhere. So in a sense that\u2019s where I\u2019ve realized depression was my superpower.<\/p>\n
It led me to become one of the first guys to ever fight professionally in the NFL in MMA, but then I started the first MMA training program for pro athletes in America, and I was on \u201cBallers,\u201d and I\u2019ve started several charities, and I\u2019ve started businesses.<\/p>\n
And by the way, still a work in progress. I\u2019m not there yet but at least I\u2019m not feeling shame anymore for the depression.<\/p>\n
Q: You\u2019re an inspiration to a lot of people.<\/p>\n
A: I used to think I was so cursed by all this. And now I think God blessed me with depression, anxiety and all these issues so I can use my pain to help others with theirs. It\u2019s freeing, it\u2019s liberating, but there\u2019s not a week that goes on in my in my life that I don\u2019t have a ton of issues.<\/p>\n
Q: Because you\u2019ve opened up, tell me about your tools and rituals.<\/p>\n
A: I do breath work, meditation, a gratitude list, my wife [Rosie Tenison] and I came up with a prayer together.<\/p>\n
Q: Tell me about the prayer.<\/p>\n
A: One will say: \u201cGood morning, God. We love you, God. You\u2019re the best, God. Bless you, God. Praise you, God. Thank you for you, God. Thank you for being our family, God, thank you for a new family, God, and thank you for being our best friend, God, we love you, God.\u201d Win the day. I talk about being a servant and leaning into your teammates to deal with your mental health issues. We view God as one of our teammates.<\/p>\n
Q: Every morning you say that?<\/p>\n
A: That\u2019s every day and every night. And then we have another thing I love from a buddy of mine \u2014 \u201cPlease God, help me to love others the way you love me.\u201d<\/p>\n
Q: What about thoughts of suicide?<\/p>\n
A: I have a lot of days where I hope tomorrow doesn\u2019t come. I made the decision a long time ago, I will never take my own life \u2019cause I\u2019m not gonna do that to you, or my son, or my wife, or Stray or anybody. I try to villainize suicide. I have a few different therapists I work with. My wife is the first person in my life when I have my meltdowns, where she\u2019ll go, \u201cHey, I\u2019m not going anywhere. I got you.\u201d I got you is the most powerful thing anybody\u2019s ever said to me in my life. She and her sister, she\u2019s an identical twin \u2014 I call one Zoloft, the other one Prozac \u2014 the two of them will then try and get me out of my painful pit that I\u2019m falling in and say, \u201cHey, let\u2019s go to the beach, let\u2019s go take the dogs here, let\u2019s go get a workout.\u201d They will not let me sit in my shame. It took me 53 years to find someone like that, but it\u2019s never too late to find love.<\/p>\n
Q: Some of your other Fox teammates: Howie Long?<\/p>\n
A: He\u2019s become my brother. When I have meltdowns and he sees it, he\u2019s like, \u201cHey, hey, the sky\u2019s not falling.\u201d I\u2019m a big practical joker. \u2026 I put like really bad racy bumper stickers on his car, big ones, and he drives around Beverly Hills \u2014 I mean really graphic ones. One time I gave him a fake lottery ticket for $25,000. Another time he was on a plane and I got his itinerary and I sent him this horrible like graphic text with someone screaming and you like couldn\u2019t turn the sound off. And he\u2019s like, \u201cDude, you sent me this thing and I had this old lady sitting next to me. What if the plane goes down and it\u2019s the last thing everybody sees on my text?\u201d I\u2019m like, \u201cHey dude, not my problem,\u201d click and I hung up on him.<\/p>\n
Q: Terry Bradshaw?<\/p>\n
A: He diagnosed my anxiety. I had my first panic attack in 2005, and I was getting my heart checked out for 12 years. He was talking about his one day in our green room, like \u201cOhmigod \u2014 that\u2019s what I have!\u201d He\u2019s authentically the funniest S.O.B. you\u2019ll ever meet in your life.<\/p>\n
Q: Gronk [Rob Gronkowski]?<\/p>\n
A: He\u2019s so authentic. Gronk is ***way*** smarter than you people have any idea about.<\/p>\n
Q: Jimmy Johnson?<\/p>\n
A: To get validation from Jimmy was the coolest thing in my life. When Jimmy tells you he\u2019s proud of you, it\u2019s one of the most special things ever. When he told me he was retiring, I was at the [draft] combine, I freakin\u2019 cried my eyes out. He sat next to me for 23 years. I\u2019ll miss him forever.<\/p>\n
Q: Curt Menefee?<\/p>\n
A: That\u2019s our therapist. I said there\u2019s six of us on that show, there\u2019s 19 personalities, and Terry and I got 12 of \u2019em (laugh). It\u2019s unbelievable how he keeps us together. He\u2019s the best host on TV, it\u2019s not even close. All those years that Strahan had to drive me back in the city, if he couldn\u2019t, Curt would, and Tiki Barber would.<\/p>\n

Q: Adam Schefter is your longest competitor. What are your thoughts on him?<\/p>\n
A: I don\u2019t think we ever coulda dreamed that the position would turn into this. I had a really, really close relationship with Mort [Chris Mortensen]. I acted like I hated ESPN. \u2026 David versus Goliath. The truth is I\u2019d call him and eventually Schefter before every season, and said, \u201cAll right, let\u2019s go have a great year, this is way better than we ever coulda dreamed about, but let\u2019s play fair, let\u2019s not steal each other\u2019s s\u2013t, let\u2019s give credit where it\u2019s due. But man, let\u2019s have a good year.\u201d But then I\u2019d act like I hate \u2019em during the season. I\u2019m really proud of [Peter] Schrager. To see what he\u2019s built up also is incredible.<\/p>\n
Q: What will you hope your legacy will be in football and in life?<\/p>\n
A: As for football, I will always be proud that I helped make \u201cinsiders\u201d a thing where guys and gals can take care of their families way more than any of us could have dreamed and that I did it the right way.<\/p>\n
As for life, I\u2019m proud of being a voice to help give mental health words to not only kick the stigma\u2019s ass, but so people have the words to communicate to their loved ones of what they are struggling with. I believe those of us who battle issues are in the majority, not the minority.<\/p>\n
I hope I can leave a legacy where people aren\u2019t ashamed anymore of it and we can all walk this walk together.
