So he built a healthier workplace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LISTEN | A more supportive workplace for first responders:<\/p>\n<p>White Coat Black Art26:30The air rescue team reinventing first responder support<\/p>\n<p>Paramedic Miles Randell still thinks about what he could have done for a friend had he been cleared to climb a mountain on a snowy January day in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Randell was working as a ground ambulance paramedic when a call came in about a man in cardiac arrest on North Vancouver\u2019s Mount Seymour.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Randell would learn it was his friend of more than 20 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/tim-jones-north-shore-rescue-team-leader-has-died-1.2503178\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Tim Jones<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Randell says the provincial ambulance service\u2019s risk-mitigation policy at the time meant that he and his colleagues weren\u2019t allowed to go up the mountain that night.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but Randell says too much time had elapsed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;ll never know for sure, but I feel like we would have given him a better chance at survival if we&#8217;d have gotten advanced care to him sooner,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A man stands next to a jeep.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764448089_295_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.3333333333333333\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Randell is the president and co-founder of Technical Evacuation Advanced Aero Medical (TEAAM). (Brian Goldman\/CBC News)<\/p>\n<p>As the years went by, Randell says he struggled more and more with the intensity of the calls.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in a very, very dark place and I needed help, but the response at the time wasn&#8217;t helpful,\u201d he told Dr. Brian Goldman, host of CBC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/radio\/whitecoat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">White Coat, Black Art.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Across Canada, several union officials who represent paramedics have sounded the alarm on the burnout, stress, and post-traumatic stress injuries that many paramedics are dealing with due to working conditions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The president of the Ambulance Paramedics of B.C. union said recently there is a &#8220;profound mental health crisis&#8221; within the profession.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Canada-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/publications.gc.ca\/collections\/collection_2018\/rddc-drdc\/D68-3-C295-2017-eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">research shows<\/a> that first responders, like paramedics, are diagnosed with post-traumatic stress injuries, depression, and anxiety at higher rates compared to the general public.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Margaret McKinnon, a professor and associate chair of research with McMaster University\u2019s psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences department, says that\u2019s because first responders face many different stressful situations in their work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat can have a widespread impact upon how they perform their daily duties, impact on their family life, impact on their own mental health and well-being,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Two people in red jackets simulate a rescue on a mountain.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764448090_525_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5129870129870129\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Crew members with Technical Evacuation Advanced Aero Medical society (TEAAM) respond to calls in remote areas of B.C., as demonstrated in this simulation. (Submitted by TEAAM)<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Randell says his career as a paramedic with the provincial ambulance service ended when he was deemed disabled and unemployable because of his mental health and post-traumatic stress injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>So Randell says he went about creating his own team of first responders. He founded Technical Evacuation Advanced Aero Medical (TEAAM), a non-profit that responds to calls in remote, wilderness areas by helicopter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The organization has mental health support baked in, says Randell. Each TEAAM member chooses the person they&#8217;re most comfortable working with as their partner \u2014 or \u201cwingperson\u201d as they call it. And each base has a point person who does regular check-ins with team members.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Creating TEAAM<\/p>\n<p>In addition to wanting to establish a supportive workplace, Randell says part of the motivation in creating TEAAM in 2018 was to address a gap in B.C\u2019s health-care system.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The nurses, physicians, paramedics and other health-care professionals working with TEAAM offer advanced care in the field, often in remote areas ground ambulances can\u2019t access.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen it comes to wilderness air ambulance work in Canada, we&#8217;re the first and only that are actually doing that type of work,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Dan Roddick says he was initially drawn to TEAAM because of what he calls the \u201cwow factor:\u201d the high-level medical care that is given to patients in remote spaces.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A man is on a line climbing a mountain.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764448091_263_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.25\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>Dan Roddick, who responds to calls out of TEAAM&#8217;s Revelstoke base, is pictured here on an annual mountain rescue course south of Revelstoke. (Submitted by Dan Roddick)<\/p>\n<p>Roddick, a full-time paramedic with the provincial ambulance service and a paid-on-call firefighter, says he stuck around to work with TEAAM on his off-time because of how much staff wellness is prioritized.<\/p>\n<p>Roddick points to a recent difficult mission with several logistical challenges after which Randell called him in the late evening to see if he needed any support.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWorking in the medical field is hard on the soul, but TEAAM prioritizes mental wellness and supporting one another through any way possible,\u201d he said in an email to CBC.<\/p>\n<p>The role of the workplace<\/p>\n<p>McKinnon says it\u2019s important for organizations to both support and connect first responders to help as needed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She adds establishing a workplace where concerns can be raised without being reprimanded, and communicating when worker feedback is implemented, are key actions leaders can take.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What TEAAM does with the wingperson program and other supports is an encouraging development, she says.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"A person hangs from a long line from a helicopter.\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1764448091_120_default.jpg\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.5110533159947985\" data-cy=\"image-img\"\/>TEAAM delivers advanced care in the field, often in remote areas ground ambulances can\u2019t access. (Submitted by TEAAM)<\/p>\n<p>CBC asked B.C. Emergency Health Services about Randell\u2019s specific circumstances and the decisions around the response to the 2014 call on Mount Seymour. An emailed statement said the organization is unable to comment on confidential human resources matters and decisions around emergency response due to privacy legislation.<\/p>\n<p>The statement went on to say that, generally speaking, the organization responds to calls as quickly as possible while considering patient safety and the well-being of staff. (Submitted by Margaret McKinnon)<\/p>\n<p>McKinnon says she\u2019s optimistic that things can change for the better for first responders, but notes this work requires resources, and that means provincial and federal dollars.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we don&#8217;t have the resources, then we can&#8217;t enact these changes, right?
