Indeed, <a href=\"https:\/\/sempremilan.com\/leao-opens-scoring-milan-lazio-tomori\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Rafael Leao\u2019s goal in the 62nd minute<\/a> looked like it was going to be enough, then drama entered the frame.<\/p>\n<p>In the final minute of stoppage time, the former Milan player Alessio Romagnoli fired a shot towards goal, which was blocked by Strahinja Pavlovic. The ball touched the Serbian\u2019s elbow and after a few minutes, the referee was called out to do an on-field review.<\/p>\n<p>Suspension awaits Di Paolo<\/p>\n<p>However, as reported by Corriere della Sera this afternoon (via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milannews.it\/primo-piano\/milan-lazio-per-i-vertici-arbitrali-non-era-rigore-il-var-di-paolo-verra-fermato-599018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">MilanNews<\/a>), the VAR referee Aleandro Di Paolo never should have ordered the on-field review in the first place. Indeed, the AIA top brass (Italian Referees Association) believes Pavlovic\u2019s handball wasn\u2019t punishable and certainly didn\u2019t warrant a penalty.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1200\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/pavlovic-handball-lazio.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-318031 has-webp\" alt=\"Pavlovic handball Lazio\"   style=\"aspect-ratio:1200\/750;max-width:1200px\"\/>Photos by Marco Rosi \u2013 SS Lazio\/Getty Images and Errori Arbitrali<\/p>\n<p>Subsequently, the fact that Di Paolo ordered an on-field review almost resulted in the head referee, Giuseppe Collu, making an incorrect decision. As we all know, the whole purpose of having VAR is to ensure the referee makes the right decision, not the opposite.<\/p>\n<p>Per the newspaper, given how serious the error was, Di Paolo will now be sidelined by AIA for at least one matchday.
