Eli Manning had some fun with the messy college coaching drama involving Lane Kiffin.<\/p>\n

Taking to X on Sunday, the same day Kiffin announced his Ole Miss departure for LSU<\/a>, the Giants and Rebels legend responded to a post shared the night before by the parody account 247Sport that read: \u201cJUST IN: Ole Miss has announced that if Lane Kiffin departs for LSU, former Rebels QB and NFL legend Eli Manning will take over as head coach.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018Coach Manning\u2019 has a nice ring to it,\u201d Manning wrote in a cheeky reply.<\/p>\n

The two-time Super Bowl winner played for Ole Miss from 2000 to 2003.<\/p>\n

Despite the humorous report, Manning, 44, won\u2019t be the one tasked with leading the No. 7-ranked Rebels into the College Football Playoff.<\/p>\n

Ole Miss has officially elevated defensive coordinator Pete Golding<\/a> to the team\u2019s permanent head coach, the program announced shortly after Kiffin, 50, made his decision official Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cAfter a lot of prayer and time spent with family, I made the difficult decision to accept the head coaching position at LSU,\u201d Kiffin posted to X on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Kiffin, who had been at the helm for the Rebels since 2020, was expected to make a decision<\/a> about his future Saturday after weeks of speculation. That dragged<\/a> into Sunday, with Yahoo Sports reporting<\/a> the postponement of a morning meeting was \u201crelated to the university\u2019s attempt to retain staff for the CFP run.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his statement, Kiffin expressed he \u201cwas hoping to complete a historic six season run with this year\u2019s team,\u201d but said he was shut down<\/a> by Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile I am looking forward to a new start with a unique opportunity at LSU, I will forever cherish the incredible six years I spent at Ole Miss and will be rooting hard for the team to complete their mission and bring a championship to Oxford,\u201d Kiffin concluded his statement.<\/p>\n

Kiffin was linked to multiple head coaching jobs outside of Oxford back in October, when Florida fired Billy Napier on Oct. 19 and LSU fired Brian Kelly a week later.
