The Wings<\/a> will not move to Memorial Auditorium in downtown Dallas next year because delays with the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center redevelopment have stalled the transition, people with knowledge of the project told The Dallas Morning News.<\/p>\n

City officials and the Wings had an agreement for the WNBA team to move to the auditorium by 2026, but the project\u2019s construction is estimated to extend into at least the second quarter of 2027, according to a memo<\/a> with the May 28 Dallas City Council meeting agenda. The WNBA season runs from May through October. <\/p>\n

The Wings, who play home games at UT-Arlington\u2019s College Park Center, would not play in Dallas until at least 2027, but the city is offering the team the option of moving its practice facility and offices to two undisclosed sites in 2026, one person familiar with the negotiations said. <\/p>\n

Wings CEO and managing partner Greg Bibb and Rosa Fleming, who oversees the city\u2019s convention and event services department, declined to comment about the timeline of the team\u2019s relocation to Memorial Auditorium.<\/p>\n

The Dallas City Council will vote June 11 to adjust its contract with the Wings, which said the team would move to Memorial Auditorium in 2026<\/a> under a 15-year, $19 million use agreement.<\/p>\n

Among the terms and conditions of the April 2024 agreement<\/a> was an understanding that if the scope of the project changed, the city could reevaluate its commitments, and any deadline changes would require the council to act.<\/p>\n

City leaders positioned the Wings to play a crucial role in Dallas\u2019 efforts to revitalize downtown<\/a>. <\/p>\n

They unveiled the schematics of the convention center<\/a> Wednesday, showcasing a vision of a mixed-use hotel and entertainment district that will draw money from a pool of $3.3 billion to $3.5 billion in tourism and hotel tax dollars in the area. <\/p>\n

Earlier this week, officials also briefed council members on the need for a $1 billion loan for the convention center project<\/a> to ready parts of the building ahead of the FIFA World Cup. The convention center was tapped as the international broadcasting center for the games and will host hundreds of journalists and visitors from all over the world. <\/p>\n

When the Wings announced their partnership with the City of Dallas, it kick-started a year of milestones for the organization, including landing superstar Paige Bueckers<\/a> with the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft to ride the momentum of the women\u2019s basketball boom. <\/p>\n

The Wings, who sold out season tickets for the past two years, are expected to play at least one more season at College Park Center before moving to Memorial Auditorium.<\/p>\n
