\n\tCharlie Puth has spoken out<\/a> against critics who claim that he isn\u2019t the best choice to sing the National Anthem at the Super Bowl.<\/p>\n

\n\tOn Sunday, the singer-songwriter was announced as a performer for Super Bowl LX in February alongside Coco Jones and Brandi Carlile, who will sing \u201cLift Every Voice and Sing\u201d and \u201cAmerica the Beautiful,\u201d respectively. But some on social media were quick to criticize Puth\u2019s booking, including one who elicited a response from Puth himself.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMan we\u2019ve fallen from when Whitney Houston sang at the Super Bowl,\u201d wrote one X user, referring to the late singer\u2019s iconic rendition of the song in 1991. \u201cCharlie Puth<\/a>? He\u2019s not gonna give us vocals I\u2019m afraid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPuth was quick to respond, quoting the tweet and stating, \u201cI\u2019ll never claim to be as good of a singer as Whitney Houston ever was. But I assure you we\u2019re putting a really special arrangement together- in D major. It\u2019ll be one of my best vocal performances.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tPuth, Jones and Carlile are the latest musicians tapped to perform at the Super Bowl, following Bad Bunny\u2019s announcement as the Halftime Show star in late September. The Puerto Rican rapper quickly became a controversial selection, coaxing responses from House Speaker Mike Johnson and President Donald Trump, who said<\/a> that it\u2019s \u201cabsolutely ridiculous\u201d that he was booked.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve never heard of him,\u201d Trump said. \u201cI don\u2019t know who he is\u2026 I don\u2019t know why they\u2019re doing it. It\u2019s crazy. And then they blame it on some promoter they hired to pick up entertainment \u2014 I think it\u2019s absolutely ridiculous.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tFor its part, the NFL stood by<\/a> Bad Bunny amid continued MAGA backlash. \u201cIt\u2019s carefully thought through,\u201d said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. \u201cI\u2019m not sure we\u2019ve ever selected an artist where we didn\u2019t have some blowback or criticism. It\u2019s pretty hard to do when you have literally hundreds of millions of people that are watching\u2026 We\u2019re confident it\u2019s going to be a great show. He understands the platform that he\u2019s on, and I think it\u2019s going to be exciting and a united moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
