{"id":326098,"date":"2025-12-02T13:39:47","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T13:39:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/326098\/"},"modified":"2025-12-02T13:39:47","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T13:39:47","slug":"clevelands-hoping-for-a-new-wnba-team-remembering-the-excitement-of-the-original-rockers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/326098\/","title":{"rendered":"Cleveland\u2019s hoping for a new WNBA team: Remembering the excitement of the original Rockers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OHSTHIYJKFHE5D7XFMA7F6U7A4\">CLEVELAND, Ohio \u2013 Cities like Cleveland vying for a WNBA franchise are riding the wave of popularity the sport has enjoyed in recent years thanks to a burst of star power from talented young players like Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese and increased marketability.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4BDOPBTTIVEDFOKTQ2TTZFNHCY\">But it\u2019s not a new phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6C4US2JU35HB3J6GVRUZWB5Z2Y\">Two decades ago, the Cleveland Rockers enjoyed success on the court and fans in the seats. The Rockers played in Gund Arena from 1997 to 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MJ6WF3MYFRBJFNB53PTHI457SM\">Memories from that first foray into professional women\u2019s basketball were revived this year when the Final Four brought its energy \u2013 and Clark and Reese &#8211; to the same arena.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"63Z4NO6BY5GGLEPJDGE4GHSOL4\">In talking with players and coaches from those early years, a camaraderie \u2013 true friendships off the court, genuine affinity between fans and players, and lasting relationships \u2013 comes through today.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N4FGGHMN6REZ5JYRYWGYVCR42Y\">Dan Hughes, who coached the team the last four years of its existence, said the Rockers had a definite \u201cidentification with the city.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GV5HHALRHBBORBGVOI6WEOZRWA\">\u201cI understand the popularity of our game has really grown,\u201d he said. \u201cBut there still was an undeniable identification between the teams I had and the city. They do appreciate a hard-working, blue-collar approach to their sport, and somebody they can count on when they go to a game, that they\u2019re going to get their money\u2019s worth. I felt that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S7FEZ6DCVRA2DOOLVPUYDRAU5A\">Hughes said the relationships between players and support staff \u201cwas unbelievable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N6KTLRW7V5HBXKMIWR2YP2PMZI\">\u201cThey knew \u2019em, they followed \u2019em,\u201d he said. \u201cThey had relationships that were beyond, \u2018Hello, how are you?\u2019 Women players especially have a great ability to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WVN2OHFYM5FUXDE54BUL6VK73A\">Fans \u201copened their arms\u201d to the Rockers, he said. And players like Rushia Brown were receptive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AXQNBY7MJJDHNFEIOWTXT6H65I\">\u201cI just remember the fans and how amazing they were and just how great the support was. That first year was really special,\u201d said Brown, who played six of her seven seasons with the Rockers. Being one of the initial 96 players in the nascent league \u201cis something that will last with me forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H4NA5YDMTBEI3PRAFRWAQWAVBA\">Brown\u2019s memories focus on her teammates, hanging out, going to dinner in the Flats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IJZOR747LNDHXMYAFYBJXE33ZU\">\u201cFor me there were always laughs. The best memories I had was the camaraderie because we did everything together. \u2026 We\u2019d all get into the minivan and go out to dinner and go out to the Flats and hang out together,\u201d said Brown, who lived at Reserve Square and who this year organized a Rockers reunion during the Final Four.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XLA6O6ZDSZAUZPIGWHJTKH2CP4\">\u201cRushia Brown, Janice Braxton, Adrienne Johnson and myself all had this tiny corner in the locker room,\u201d said Raegan Pebley, who played for the Rockers in 1998 and who is general manager of the WNBA\u2019s Los Angeles Sparks. \u201cEvery practice, after they would beat me up every day &#8211; I had bruises all over me \u2013 we would just sit there and laugh and have a good time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S4JHIQSD5FDGHGCSDVY4EE3IWM\">The Rockers, she said, were a team that \u201cwould take our jobs very seriously but didn\u2019t take ourselves very seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"With the news that Cleveland is interested in a WNBA franchise, we go down memory lane to recall the years of the Cleveland Rockers, one of the original WNBA teams.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/SUHOSSM3Z5AG7P5PADQ4II5XTU.jpg\"  \/>Mike Wilhelm coached with the Rockers and the Cavs before leaving  for a job with the Chicago Bulls in 2002.In the beginning<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6AGF6NUALRHHFAIQUCIZDVQ7AE\">The WNBA\u2019s launch followed the excitement of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, where the undefeated U.S. squad tore through competition to a gold medal. Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund wanted to bring a women\u2019s team to Cleveland, said Mike Wilhelm, who coached with both the Cavs and Rockers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SF4O6SWOWZAVFFRK62VDCYBOQU\">\u201cIt was a great time,\u201d he said. \u201cI tell you, when we started it, it was bare bones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2S4VMHI3GJBCXBGZESHH5GVLPY\">Wilhelm worked for Cavs coach Mike Fratello as one of the team\u2019s first video coordinators. General Manager was Wayne Embry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FEBGMUDDGBAKBCRD2TBGRCJEHE\">\u201cThe Big Man summoned me to his office,\u201d he said. \u201cHe said, \u2018Hey listen, I know you\u2019re busy with the Cavs, but I want someone in there as an assistant.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BIQYJBTN2BAADJY5SFIE4YJY6A\">So Wilhelm took on double duty between the Cavs and Rockers, something he called \u201ca badge of honor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PUXE4NXH6NDXLK3UVCBEFRVFLY\">Over time, the league added teams and games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YU5MHS6CEBCO5KKENDG4PJBXWI\">\u201cIt was exciting everywhere we went,\u201d Wilhelm said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EX64JXMZYJC4RJAUEDTDBQN6DY\">The 1997 draft had three parts, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IRFJOFEQ5VBWRCVF5VS3MYNG6A\">First: Initial player allocation assigned 16 players to each team. The Rockers received Janice Lawrence Braxton (Louisiana Tech) and Michelle Edwards (Iowa).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L3AC4YJEIBECFIDW3ZXYHJHKYE\">Second: The elite draft. The team picked up a talented center in Isabelle Fijalkowski of France (Colorado) in the first round. In the second , they took Lynnette Woodard (Kansas), who had been the first female to play for the Harlem Globetrotters a decade earlier.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OJPKW5M7B5A65JH6MRHGMCWVKM\">Third: The college draft. The team\u2019s first pick was Eva Nemcova (Czech Republic).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7YDHIL2GQZAW5C3KZBEZ2ERWDM\">On June 21, 1997, the Rockers played their inaugural game at Gund Arena. Among 11,455 fans in attendance were Cavs All-Star guard Terrell Brandon and Cleveland Indians Julio Franco and Kevin Seitzer. Houston defeated Cleveland, 76-56. Nemcova was shown on Page One of The Plain Dealer high-fiving fans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CZPQLWXKTZETHGSQT3ER3QNXIU\">\u201cEva could really shoot it,\u201d said Wilhelm, a St. Ignatius High School grad. Nemcova, he said, could shoot off the catch, defend multiple positions because of great footwork, was sturdy and adept at pick and rolls &#8211; \u201cjust a great pure basketball player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5OS2HVWZFBEO3JXDDHGJQVJJ4I\">The Rockers finished 15-13. They lost a tiebreaker to make the playoffs. But the seeds were planted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6EQGFJ2Q3BHWFMLQM3BF6YH4TQ\">In their seven-year existence, the Rockers had four winning seasons, two losing ones and one at .500. They made the playoffs four times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J7EHOKOYHJHDZH2QXDC2BZFLW4\">They also bonded by sharing stories of their time playing previously in Europe. Lawrence Braxton knew how valuable it was for a kid who grew up in Mississippi to experience the world, said Wilhelm, who still does basketball clinics across the globe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E2BWQBFRZJEOTACGWJ6NLG4JAI\">One time they were at East Tech High School. Wilhelm ran drills, but Lawrence Braxton spoke from her heart to about 150 kids as she held a basketball.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ARBN7WLZZ5AWTIYDLUG446F74M\">\u201cThis basketball, if you treat it with respect, do your very best and do your hardest every time you play the game, it will open up doors for you,\u201d he recalled her saying.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MEMQJKJWPJGCXCFDTWQKHVXXIM\">It was those moments that makes Wilhelm remember his friendship with announcer Joe Tait.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"74CDJZBZGNDNBA3KZLX3HO7IMU\">\u201cJoe loved calling the games,\u201d Wilhelm said. \u201cHe\u2019d say, \u2018You know what? The women are just a lot nicer.\u2019 You could talk about social issues. The guys just didn\u2019t have as much time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Thirty years ago this month, Gund Arena opened. In that time it has held thousands of events, games, concerts and shows. Here\u2019s a look at the history of the venue.\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/GCCXWHQ67ZBVDCIUVNCEPYESAA.jpg\"  \/>The women&#8217;s Final Four was held in April in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse &#8211; the same arena where the Cleveland Rockers played two decades earlier.Marc Bona, cleveland.comGrowth in the league: The game evolves<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KVBQVJJUHNEL7MVICYLFIPZ6QI\">Time, it turns out, is on Cleveland\u2019s side. The game has improved. Star power continues. And the city is riding the high of the electrifying Final Four. Hughes said he was thrilled when news broke that Cleveland was one of the cities vying for a franchise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OB2OW6Q5QBF7FLJUAMI5CBO3G4\">\u201cWhen I heard that, my phone just kind of blew up,\u201d he said. \u201cFor a guy who absolutely loved his time in Cleveland, the chance that would return, that thrilled me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5Q4LEGLAMVC4THT57SZNLIMOMY\">Wilhelm sees the women\u2019s game as being in a good place.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"552UTPZHS5FLPJ2WAD37BXDLAE\">\u201cI think the popularity will continue to grow,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t see it going the other way. It will eventually maybe level off at some point. Obviously, Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese were household names. The social-media aspect has helped because of the younger generation that follows that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6XXJF6BHURFYZH37ZJRNEWL4IU\">In the early days, the Rockers had one assistant. Now teams have several, like the NBA. Salaries have more than doubled. More owners want to be involved, envisioning arenas as a revenue-generator, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"WEY5KESHO5AI5AEKH7Y5RSPLEM\">It\u2019s become uncommon to hear the word \u2018sets\u2019 \u2013 as in planned plays \u2013 in the NBA, which has accelerated its one-on-one game. But the women\u2019s game? Shooting with range has improved. Back-door cuts and give-and-gos are common. And men are watching more, too, Wilhelm said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QGGJTAKPWFECPDK5Q2OG6VCN2M\">Moving forward, more eyes will land on the league. This year, the WNBA signed an 11-year media-rights deal with multiple networks worth more than $2 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"X4AZGBTCYNDEHIEA72Y4RO4M4E\">In 1998, the team went 20-10 and finished first in the East. That season turned out to be extra special for Wilhelm: The Rockers\u2019 success allowed him to coach in the 1999 WNBA All-Star Game, the league\u2019s first, in New York. Merlakia Jones was the sole Cleveland representative. Wilhelm holds the distinction of having coached in a WNBA All-Star game and an NBA All-Star game, in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"EIODG2WJO5COTOV7BFJ6XJL43M\">Fans were ecstatic the first few years. Teams were added. After 1999, Wilhelm went full time with the Cavs and couldn\u2019t do double-duty any more. Hughes would go on to coach WNBA teams in San Antonio and Seattle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3YGINPXZSZAGLCOSTA3NPTSQN4\">\u201cI had a great career,\u201d said Hughes, originally from Lowell, Ohio. \u201cI can\u2019t see myself leaving if the Rockers would have stayed. That was my dream job, to be honest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FQV4LYKWMRE35ME7LK3DTPE7EU\">The demise was about the team not making enough money, recalled Wilhelm, who started with the Chicago Bulls in 2002.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YI5YT3NHUJBBJLUVJQY6HOR3CE\">Wilhelm is right. The Rockers did not turn a profit in any of their seasons. It was announced on Sept. 19, 2003, that the Rockers were done, financial losses and declining attendance the culprit. For their final season, the team ranked 10th of 14 teams in attendance, averaging 7,400 fans. No new owner was found, so the team folded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QZ6QTNGHQRFVJDOHAUEDV2ZFUI\">In 2004, the league held a dispersal draft. And Cleveland could be next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4UJ7AYHBGRFPROWIUKUPJKLGMQ\">In November, Nic Barlage, CEO for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Rock Entertainment Group and Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, said Rock Entertainment Group is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/cavs\/2024\/11\/could-the-wnba-be-coming-back-to-cleveland.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u201cactively pursuing bringing a WNBA expansion team to Cleveland.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FCHSHWA7NZCUDBHUAUX3GC4RKI\">Key to viewership, Brown said, is players\u2019 visibility with a boost from social media.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZBSPRBHQ7VB3ZHKFU2FGHU3TEQ\">\u201cWe\u2019ve always had an amazing game,\u201d she said, \u201cbut it wasn\u2019t always able to be seen at the level it is now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6AKRM7CMIFBG5PTZNWFNXG3OAI\">Player-turned front office executive Pebley says the game and players have always been great and players are \u201crelatable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4F7ZPNTXGFGXXG3WGM5ELM23TE\">\u201cI really have always felt like women\u2019s basketball did not have a product problem, it had more of a marketing issue. I think the players have done an incredible job over the years continuing to take the marketing into their own hands. I think social media has a lot to do with that. We owe a lot to the women who did everything they could to make sure they were promoting our game. And I think even individual promotion is promotion of our game,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BWS2ZXMWLZAPFDKNI4HPJAQVZE\">Hughes, a respected coach in the women\u2019s game, is ecstatic about the possibility of Cleveland gaining a team, saying: \u201cI would be very happy to be the first season-ticket holder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OZBB5CWQH5ECNKRORUON5JAECA\">\u201cThere\u2019s a certain energy,\u201d he said. \u201cPeople will stop me and they want to know things (about the league) and I just think that\u2019s such a beautiful thing.
