To be fair, her locker at her NYC performing arts high school was plastered with photos of America\u2019s Sweetheart, so the comparison wasn\u2019t totally out of the blue. Nevertheless, she ran with it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThat was all I needed to hear to decide that this was what I wanted to do and be,\u201d says Paulson. \u201cI dreamed of doing romantic comedies and working with incredible directors like she was working with. She just seemed like she could do it all, and she can. But it was definitely not working out that way for me. I was not going to become this sort of internationally beloved superstar. That was not my journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhile she and Roberts have led decidedly different careers, legions of fans across the globe would consider Paulson an international superstar. In fact, she makes a great case to carry on the mantle of America\u2019s Sweetheart, simply for the titles on her resume: \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/american-horror-story\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Horror Story<\/a>,\u201d \u201cAmerican Crime Story,\u201d \u201cMiss America\u201d and 1995\u2019s \u201cAmerican Gothic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s a whole weird theme,\u201d she laughs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor that \u201cAmerican\u201d run and many other achievements, Paulson will be honored Dec. 2 with a star on the <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/hollywood-walk-of-fame\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hollywood-walk-of-fame\" data-tag=\"hollywood-walk-of-fame\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hollywood Walk of Fame<\/a>. It comes on the heels of her Tony win for \u201cAppropriate\u201d on Broadway and her renewed partnership with prolific producer Ryan Murphy, for whom she is starring in two upcoming series (\u201cAHS 13\u201d and \u201cMonster\u201d Season 4) and the current hit, \u201cAll\u2019s Fair.\u201d But as she reflects on her journey, she\u2019s pushing herself to dream even bigger.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/179703_JMAR1211.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"667\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tDisney<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m looking to be a little more fearless in terms of betting on myself,\u201d says Paulson. \u201cIf I look back at the things I\u2019ve gotten to do, I never could have dreamed that I would have done a single one of them. I can only imagine that if I really take that in and let that live inside me as the truth, maybe the best is in front of me.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tPaulson went through \u201cslim years,\u201d as she calls the \u201990s-\u201900s, when she worked enough to pay rent but never enough to \u201csatiate my appetite for the experience of acting.\u201d In fact, \u201cAmerican Gothic,\u201d on which she played a teenage ghost, was the first time she flew to Los Angeles to audition. Talking about it 30 years later, she experiences a tinge of nostalgia for that bygone part of her career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI haven\u2019t had an audition in person in many, many years. A lot of people see it as a blessing and a communication of forward motion in their career. But I long for the day when you have that personal connection with a creative of any kind,\u201d she says. \u201cThere was a time when that was the only time I would get to act, when I went into a room to audition. It\u2019s something I think about very fondly \u2014 that feeling that you won the job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tHer turning point was 2011 with a trio of projects, including her Emmy-nominated role as Nicolle Wallace in HBO\u2019s \u201cGame Change,\u201d a role in the indie darling \u201cMartha Marcy May Marlene,\u201d and FX\u2019s \u201cAmerican Horror Story.\u201d The latter changed her life.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe only had three episodes as psychic Billie Dean Howard in the first season, but Murphy gave her the lead role in Season 2. She led a new generation of scream queens across seven more seasons, before tapping out after Season 10. While not an easy decision, she was burnt out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThere\u2019s this phenomenon I\u2019ve talked to other actors about that is really hard to describe unless you\u2019re running through the woods simulating terror for six months out of the year, every year,\u201d she says. \u201cYour body doesn\u2019t know the difference between the real and imagined, at least not the way I work. If I\u2019m terrified, I\u2019m hyperventilating and I\u2019m running from something, then I\u2019m actually experiencing that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tShe stayed in touch with her former co-stars, watching from the group chats with a sense of longing as they continued on. On Halloween this year, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/american-horror-story-season-13-cast-ariana-grande-jessica-lange-1236566976\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Murphy revealed that Paulson will reunite <\/a>with Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Evan Peters and others for the as-yet-titled \u201cAHS 13.\u201d That reunion of old friends was enough to get her running through the woods again, so to speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI missed it, and I\u2019m really looking forward to doing it again,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was like this dovetailing of my longing for it and the idea that I would be reunited with [all of them] just came together at the right time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/wp-content\/themes\/pmc-variety-2020\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/american-horror-story.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-lazy- data-lazy- height=\"750\" width=\"1000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\u201cAmerican Horror Story\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tCourtesy of FX<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe new season will film in early 2026, but Paulson\u2019s resurgence in the Murphy-verse also includes \u201cAll\u2019s Fair\u201d and the upcoming fourth season of \u201cMonster\u201d as serial killer Aileen Wuornos.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe latter is the latest true-life project Paulson has hooked into, following her \u201cAmerican Crime Story\u201d role as Marcia Clark, and later whistleblower Linda Tripp. The thrill of playing a real person is in the guardrails. \u201cI like having a blueprint and undeniable facts about a character that are not open for my interpretation, because I can sort of have more freedom inside of it,\u201d she says. \u201cYou would think it would be the opposite, but it sort of taught me that I like to immerse myself in another person\u2019s experience, in the reality of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAnd she\u2019s already down the rabbit hole of researching Wuornos\u2019 life, mainlining every documentary and interview. She accepted Murphy\u2019s offer to join the show, script unseen. But don\u2019t expect wall-to-wall Paulson in \u201cMonster,\u201d which centers on accused 1892 axe murderer Lizzie Borden.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cI\u2019m coming on to do a particular thing that I can\u2019t talk about. But I\u2019m always going to be interested in the why of human behavior. If there\u2019s any opportunity for me to get inside something that has been predetermined by society and have a little look at it through my own particular lens, I\u2019m always going to want to do that. Ryan knows that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tOn the road to Wuornos and \u201cAHS 13,\u201d Paulson is testing that pledge of fearlessness by playing something new \u2014 the comedic villain. In \u201cAll\u2019s Fair,\u201d she portrays a viperous lawyer hellbent on destroying the lives and cases of her former colleagues. Paulson fires off graphic insults with pleasure, something she finds liberating. \u201cHer version of retaliation for being hurt and left out is all-out war. And I have to tell you, it is just a gloriously good time,\u201d she says. \u201cThere was a kind of freedom in knowing that I could really go balls to the wall because of the writing. I actually called Kim Kardashian \u2018beef curtains.\u2019 I call her \u2018cuntburger\u2019 and \u2018Mayor McHeadcheese!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tLike almost every turn in her career, \u201cAll\u2019s Fair\u201d inspired some \u201cHow did I get here?\u201d reflection, which Paulson\u2019s still excavating. But what\u2019s certain is how happy she is to have found her lane \u2014 Carrington and otherwise. Not even the show\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/tv\/news\/kim-kardashians-alls-fair-zero-star-review-bad-reactions-1236569568\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">savage critical reception<\/a> could kill that high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cDoes anybody like to get <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2025\/film\/news\/glenn-close-knives-out-alls-fair-reviews-1236585706\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reviews from the critics<\/a> that are not stellar? No,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s always a wild thing to put the thing you\u2019ve been working on out into the world for people to determine its value. But I feel like what matters to me is the absolute unbridled joy and fun we have had making and promoting the show.
