{"id":329225,"date":"2025-12-04T03:12:16","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T03:12:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/329225\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T03:12:16","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T03:12:16","slug":"alabama-sky-to-put-on-a-show-in-december-full-moon-comet-geminid-meteor-shower-and-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/329225\/","title":{"rendered":"Alabama sky to put on a show in December: Full moon, comet, Geminid Meteor Shower and more"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UVKY5M3XMZHR3GF7GURDACU2DE\">Skywatchers will have a lot to look at in the night skies over Alabama in December.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"CREFZUNUAZHZNKOUEQHS34ORMA\">A super moon, a meteor shower and a comet are just a few.<\/p>\n<p>DEC. 4: SUPER MOON<img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"December moon phases\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/UJCOLOBHXFH6NAQPTUXAA2V3OA.png\"  \/>Here are the phases of the moon in December of 2025.NASA<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VJ6C2PLEIRCQJIMZWT22J3D3FM\">Coming up first is a super moon on Dec. 4 (Thursday).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"M27OQRUXF5CI7EYC2J4DEKHHFU\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/december-night-sky-events-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/science\/article\/december-night-sky-events-2025\">National Geographic<\/a> the final full moon of the year will also be a super moon, which means it will be at its fullest as it makes its closest approach to Earth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2OQCNDHADNEBRNZA46257N3SKA\">On Thursday the moon will rise around 5:15 p.m. in north and central Alabama and closer to 5:30 p.m. in south Alabama, and it will appear full tonight and Friday night as well (if you can see it through expected clouds and showers).<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6JHE2MFVDVCDBGVCS7N2LFPCS4\">However, clouds could get in the way, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/how-much-more-rain-will-alabama-get-this-week.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.al.com\/weather\/2025\/12\/how-much-more-rain-will-alabama-get-this-week.html\">rain in the forecast<\/a> for much of the state starting on Thursday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>DEC. 7: MERCURY, THE MOON AND JUPITER<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"D3B23FKSZ5GJVCOT6TNKB5BRTQ\">According to National Geographic the planet Mercury will also be on center stage this month, reaching what NG called its \u201clongest elongation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7AYHVPGZBNEO7GBUCIAMSVLPDI\">On Dec. 7 Mercury will reach its widest separation from the sun, which should offer a better view of it away from the sun\u2019s glare.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TA7WYUBM5BDU5P3HMVRCIDL7M4\">According to National Geographic look for Mercury about an hour before sunrise on Dec. 7 (Sunday). It will rise above the eastern horizon, with Venus right behind it. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OVP2DG7YENC4JIAP67OHVZJOXA\">That\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Moon and Jupiter\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/LWJUUJ3PDZCWJGVVOCZQBBA27Y.png\"  \/>The moon and Jupiter will appear close in the sky on Dec. 7.NASA<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KS4XFY6QYZHZLPVCDUL6FK52AQ\"><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/skywatching\/whats-up-december-2025-skywatching-tips-from-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/skywatching\/whats-up-december-2025-skywatching-tips-from-nasa\/\">According to NASA<\/a> the night of Dec. 7 will bring a close conjunction of the moon and Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FTSV6JRXJFGHXGY7NIJHTRBAR4\">NASA describes a celestial conjunction as when planets and moons appear close together even though they\u2019re actually far apart. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VBH6BV2RMBCLBLZXHQ6AB5JLLI\">\u201cFor example, while the Moon and Jupiter will buddy up this month from our view, in space, they\u2019re actually hundreds of millions of miles apart,\u201d the space agency said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BPBSOPCGVJCG3O27Q3ULQAPCRU\">To see the conjunction, look to the eastern sky on the night of Dec. 7 (Sunday). Jupiter will be just above and to the right of the moon. <\/p>\n<p>DEC. 13-14: GEMINID METEOR SHOWER PEAKS<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UKCELLKZ25BTHHQMZVIJ4QUY24\">The annual Geminid meteor shower will peak on the evenings of Dec. 13 an 14.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"H7I7TYEQPNH4LGHGK3YITWSYVE\">According to NASA the Geminids are known for being bright and colorful. The meteors originate from debris trailing the asteroid 3200 Phaethon. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IIOTAFBZMNECDPR2VFQ7SQULTM\">In the right conditions it\u2019s possible to see up to 120 Geminid meteors per hour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"QAJHOBFKQFFBPLSHSZXFJCS2JU\">NASA said to catch the Geminids at their peak, \u201clook to the eastern sky all evening on Dec. 13 and Dec. 14. The meteors will appear near the bright planet Jupiter.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5DDPYVOB6RCHPD5SCBW2G6P3LE\">You\u2019ll want to find the darkest skies possible for best viewing.<\/p>\n<p>DEC. 19: COMET COMES CLOSE-ISH<img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Comet 3I\/Atlas\" class=\"article__image-content\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/JHEBFHK2Y5GNHPYBAE43JFIZ54.png\"  \/>Here&#8217;s where to look for the comet 3I\/Atlas early in the morning on Dec. 19.NASA<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YJZQYOJCP5DINEFC4JEJMLOAO4\">Comet 3I\/ATLAS will make its closest approach to Earth on Dec. 19. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MFEEGXP4HJGLPP4XFFLBJS5EFU\">But it really won\u2019t be all that close, and there\u2019s no threat to our home planet, according to NASA.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4MPAMUNUI5EGRAVDJFCQOFCTNQ\">At its closest the comet will be 170 million miles away, or more than 700 times the distance between the Earth and the moon, NASA said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"FOUXN4VFWZFPXK47LFG5FSUAQU\">This comet is also noteworthy because it is the third object in history from outside of our solar system to be discovered within our solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"47BG3WYQNZGUXFFWDFDADYIWOY\">The best chance of seeing it will be with a telescope. Look to the east or northeast in the pre-dawn hours right under the star Regulus in the constellation Leo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"AETG4YD52JEOHBSQ4MIMQJPJ5A\">According to National Geographic astronomers believe the comet originated from a faraway star system in the Milky Way and could be more than 7 billion years old.<\/p>\n<p>DEC. 21-22 URSID METEORS PEAK<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"BRFLPTA7XBBN3AFHNFZH7Z2BXU\">The Ursids won\u2019t provide as many meteors per hour as the Geminids, but the moon will be very dim at this point in the month, which could aid in spotting a few. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3NEBLIA5FNGQ5JFIDEQMPVFIOE\">According to National Geographic 10 meteors per hour could be seen under the right conditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q4ZM3ETR3RGNLH4LBHVVLHYQVE\">The best time to look for them will be just before dawn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Skywatchers will have a lot to look at in the night skies over Alabama in December.
