A famed music producer is pulling back the curtain on why a rock band replaced its guitarist on a classic album.<\/p>\n
Aerosmith<\/a> used outside guitarists on its 1974 sophomore release, \u201cGet Your Wings,\u201d producer Jack Douglas confirmed in a new interview. Douglas said Joe Perry<\/a> was clearly talented, but he didn\u2019t have the right skills yet.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s Dick Wagner and Steve Hunter\u201d playing guitar on songs like \u201cTrain Kept a Rollin\u2019\u201d and \u201cSame Old Song and Dance,\u201d Douglas told the Magnificent Others with Billy Corgan<\/a> podcast. \u201cWhich was a hard sell.”<\/p>\n \u201cJoe was a guy who played from the gut. All feel, and at that time, very little technique, but the greatest feel ever,\u201d Douglas said. \u201cAnd dangerous. Really, because he didn\u2019t care what key he went into, and sometimes that was great.\u201d<\/p>\n Douglas told Smashing Pumpkins<\/a> frontman Billy Corgan<\/a> that it was Douglas\u2019 idea to bring in session guitarists with more \u201cdiscipline.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I approached Steven [Tyler] about it first, he was like, \u2018Absolutely, I totally get it. You know, I totally get it. You sell it, but I get it,\u2019\u201d the producer recalled. \u201cJoe took it really badly.\u201d <\/p>\n \u201cIt was hard for Joe, but it was only a couple of tunes: \u2018Same Old Song and Dance\u2019 and \u2018Train Kept a Rollin.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cGet Your Wings\u201d ultimately ended up being a success, selling more than 3 million copies. It built on the success of Aerosmith\u2019s self-titled 1973 debut, featuring \u201cDream On,\u201d and led to breakout hits like \u201cSweet Emotion\u201d and \u201cWalk This Way\u201d from 1975\u2019s \u201cToys in the Attic.\u201d<\/p>\n Douglas, who also worked with John Lennon<\/a> and Cheap Trick, returned to work with Aerosmith on \u201cToys in the Attic\u201d and other Aerosmith albums, including the acclaimed 1976 release \u201cRocks.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cIn the end, it worked out, because they learned those solos and went out on the road for a year. And came back when we did \u2018Toys,\u2019\u201d said Douglas. \u201cThey were like a different… Completely different musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n Aerosmith became one of the best-selling rock bands of all time, with additional hits like \u201cCrazy,\u201d \u201cDude (Looks Like a Lady),\u201d \u201cJanie\u2019s Got a Gun,\u201d \u201cLove in an Elevator,\u201d \u201cCryin\u2019\u201d and \u201cI Don\u2019t Want to Miss a Thing.\u201d Aerosmith was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2001, won multiple Grammy Awards, and the \u201cToxic Twins\u201d Tyler and Perry were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2013.<\/p>\n The band abruptly retired<\/a> last year and canceled a farewell tour due to Tyler\u2019s vocal injury. However, Tyler, Perry and bassist Tom Hamilton reunited<\/a> in February for Tyler\u2019s Jam For Janie Grammy Awards Viewing Party, a charity event in Los Angeles, and Tyler performed with Perry at the recent MTV Video Music Awards to pay tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne<\/a>.<\/p>\n Aerosmith also released \u201cOne More Time,\u201d a new five-song EP made in collaboration with Yungblud, last month.
