{"id":330131,"date":"2025-12-04T14:42:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-04T14:42:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/330131\/"},"modified":"2025-12-04T14:42:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-04T14:42:08","slug":"why-david-cone-could-be-an-espn-casualty-with-new-mlb-broadcasting-schedule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/330131\/","title":{"rendered":"Why David Cone could be an ESPN casualty with new MLB broadcasting schedule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new ESPN baseball broadcast schedule may cost the company its top analyst in David Cone.<\/p>\n<p>With ESPN switching its showcase game from \u201cSunday Night Baseball\u201d to midweek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47026249\/espn-mlb-reach-new-3-year-media-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">beginning next season<\/a>, that will clash more with Cone\u2019s more robust Yankees-affiliated YES Network schedule and that could lead to a potential split, <a href=\"https:\/\/frontofficesports.com\/with-espns-new-game-schedule-david-cone-could-leave-the-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to Front Office Sports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Cone\u2019s contract reportedly will expire around the start of the 2026 MLB season, which begins March 25 when the Giants host the Yankees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cESPN loves Cone\u2014and wants to keep him. But juggling the two network schedules is going to be difficult,\u201d a source told Front Office Sports. \u201cWe\u2019ll see how it works out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cone, 62, is arguably the premier analyst in the sport, earning rave reviews for his ability to provide viewers with deep dives into pitchers and batters\u2019 mindsets after 17 years in the big leagues.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:2.17409766;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37839738\" width=\"1024\" height=\"471\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot-2025-12-04-at-7.35.35\u202fAM.png\" alt=\"MLB Opening Night on ESPN with announcers Eduardo P\u00e9rez, David Cone, and Karl Ravech.\" class=\"wp-image-37839738\"  \/>David Cone calling a 2025 game for ESPN. @ESPNMLB\/YouTube<\/p>\n<p>The old arrangement with ESPN airing its standout game on Sunday worked within Cone\u2019s Yankees duties since it was easier for him to miss the final day of a series, and there were always weekend series during the season in which Cone does not have any duties.<\/p>\n<p>The 2025 season marked Cone\u2019s fourth calling games for \u201cSunday Night Baseball,\u201d and he\u2019s been with YES Network since 2011 after previous short stints in 2002 and from 2008-09.<\/p>\n<p>Jared Boshnack, YES\u2019 executive producer and VP of production, told Front Office Sports that Cone called 40 Yankees games last year and is scheduled for more this upcoming season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDavid is phenomenal. He makes our team better,\u201d Boshnack said to Front Office Sports. \u201cWe\u2019re very happy to have him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cone\u2019s uptick in games come as the network <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/10\/29\/sports\/john-flaherty-out-at-yes-network-after-20-years-in-yankees-tv-shakeup\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">moved on from longtime analyst John Flaherty.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.48837209;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37839731\" width=\"878\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/david-cone-speaks-steve-serby-22495083.jpg\" alt=\"David Cone speaking during an interview at Yankee Stadium.\" class=\"wp-image-37839731\"  \/>Davie Cone in the YES booth. for the NY POST<\/p>\n<p>If ESPN and Cone are unable to make the logistics work, it\u2019s possible he could be in play for a new role with NBC or Netflix.<\/p>\n<p>NBC will now be airing the Sunday night game in its return to airing MLB action, with 25 games on tap for the 2026 season, <a href=\"http:\/\/espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/47026249\/espn-mlb-reach-new-3-year-media-agreement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to ESPN<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The network is searching for a \u201cstar game analyst,\u201d for said games, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbc.com\/nbc-insider\/mlb-returns-to-nbc-sunday-night-baseball-wild-card-round-more\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">plus wild-card action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Netflix is joining the mix but has a limited amount of games, plus the Home Run Derby.<\/p>\n<p>The streaming giant will broadcast the Yankees-Giants season-opening tilt, along with the Field of Dreams game on Aug. 13, when the Twins battle the Phillies.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The new ESPN baseball broadcast schedule may cost the company its top analyst in David Cone.
