And that&#8217;s likely led you to do plenty of standing barbell and dumbbell biceps curls. <\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"1\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Thing is, while this exercise is classic and fundamental, it just may not be the best route to mountainous arms. At least that&#8217;s what exercise physiologist and strength coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.patdavidson\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/dr.patdavidson\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Dr. Pat Davidson\" data-node-id=\"1.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. Pat Davidson<\/a> told MH fitness director <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ebenezersamuel23\/?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/ebenezersamuel23\/?hl=en\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S.\" data-node-id=\"1.3\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ebenezer Samuel, C.S.C.S.<\/a> when the two broke down the best biceps exercises in the latest episode of Strong Talk. Sure, the moves are good, and of course you&#8217;ll feel a good biceps pump. But dive deeper into the physics of a standing biceps curl of any sort, and you&#8217;ll discover that you have better options. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-dynamic-svg=\"true\" src=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/_assets\/design-tokens\/fre\/static\/icons\/play.db7c035.svg?primary=%2523ffffff\" loading=\"lazy\" data-testid=\"dynamic-svg-base\" height=\"24\" width=\"24\" alt=\"Play Icon\" role=\"img\" title=\"Play\" class=\"css-ovd4yx e7hrar01\"\/><img alt=\"two individuals engaged in a conversation about fitness\" title=\"The Best Exercise for Bigger Biceps\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1000\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" style=\"color:transparent;width:100%;height:auto;\"   src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/thumb_1920x1080.0000001.jpg\" class=\"e7hrar03 css-g939jb e1g79fud0\"\/><\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"4\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Davidson&#8217;s main issue with dumbbell and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a42744729\/barbell-curls\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a42744729\/barbell-curls\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"barbell biceps curls\" data-node-id=\"4.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">barbell biceps curls<\/a>: You don&#8217;t truly get maximum &#8220;torque&#8221; on your biceps when you&#8217;re doing those curls. And it&#8217;s that torque that pushes your biceps to work hardest, stimulating growth in the long-term. \u201cTorque is going to be the combination of weight and the horizontal distance that the weight is away from the joint that\u2019s rotating,\u201d he explains. \u201cMuscles don\u2019t respond to load, they respond to torque.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"6\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">Your goal on any biceps exercise, according to Davidson, should be this: You want the weight to be as far as possible from the elbow joint when your biceps is stretched. This occurs when your forearm is parallel to the ground. During a standing biceps curl, that horizontal moment occurs when your elbow is at a 90-degree angle, so your biceps isn&#8217;t fully stretched. During a preacher curl, however, that horizontal moment occurs when your elbow is at a much wider angle, creating more torque and more potential for growth.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"7\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That&#8217;s why both Davidson and Samuel recommend preacher curls as your top option for growing biceps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a67961372\/guide-to-preacher-curls\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-vars-ga-outbound-link=\"https:\/\/www.menshealth.com\/fitness\/a67961372\/guide-to-preacher-curls\/\" data-vars-ga-ux-element=\"Hyperlink\" data-vars-ga-call-to-action=\"Preacher curls\" data-node-id=\"7.1\" class=\"body-link css-1d8p8n5 emevuu60\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Preacher curls<\/a> are also better at stabilizing the shoulder compared to standing biceps curls, thanks to the support of a preacher bench or incline bench. \u201cIt provides external stability rather than you using your muscles at your shoulder to do internal stability,\u201d Davidson says.<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"8\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">That\u2019s not to say standing biceps curls are worthless. Exercises with high torque are also more prone to bugging your joints, says Davidson, especially if you&#8217;ve just gotten into training or returned to heavy biceps work after a long layoff. Classic standing biceps curls prevent that stress, and they&#8217;re a great place for beginners to start, says Samuel. \u201cThere&#8217;s nothing wrong with a standing dumbbell or a standing barbell curl,&#8221; says Davidson. &#8220;From a pure stimulus perspective, it\u2019s [just] not quite as powerful rep to rep as a preacher curl.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-journey-content=\"true\" data-node-id=\"9\" class=\"css-6wxqfj emevuu60\">But it has its place, like all biceps curl options, from incline curls to cable curls.
