The Swedish navy is encountering Russian submarines in the Baltic sea \u201calmost weekly\u201d, according to the chief of operations. <\/p>\n

Captain Marko Petkovic has said that Russia is \u201ccontinuously reinforcing\u201d its presence in the region, adding that sightings of submarines have now become \u201cvery common\u201d. <\/p>\n

He added that increased Nato vigilance has helped protect crucial undersea cables in the region. He was quoted by The Guardian as saying: \u201cIt shows that the alliance works, cohesion. And we are closing ranks against one particular threat. The Baltic Sentry has proven that point. Regardless of whether any of the incidents have been state-sponsored or if it\u2019s been bad seamanship, or anything in between, it has raised awareness amongst the merchant fleet that they should be a bit more cautious when travelling our regional waters\u201d. <\/p>\n

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said that Russia\u2019s overnight drone attack was \u201cmeaningless from a military point of view\u201d. <\/p>\n

Energy facilities were the main targets of the attacks, Mr Zelensky said, also noting that a drone strike had “burned down” the train station in the city of Fastiv, located in the Kyiv region.<\/p>\n

Mr Zelensky posted on X on Saturday morning, saying: “The attack was meaningless from a military point of view, and the Russians could not have been unaware of this.”<\/p>\n

At least eight people were wounded in the attacks, Ukrainian minister of internal affairs Ihor Klymenko said.<\/p>\n

Russia carried out a “massive missile-drone attack” on power stations and other energy infrastructure in several Ukrainian regions, Ukraine’s national energy operator, Ukrenergo, wrote on Telegram.<\/p>\n

Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant temporarily lost all off-site power overnight, the International Atomic Energy Agency said on Saturday, citing its director-general Rafael Mariano Grossi.<\/p>\n

Ukraine\u2019s military has confirmed that it hit Russia\u2019s Ryazan oil refinery. <\/p>\n

Russian Telegram news channel Astra had said earlier that Ukraine struck the Ryazan Oil Refinery, sharing footage appearing to show a fire breaking out and plumes of smoke rising above the refinery. <\/p>\n

Ryazan regional governor Pavel Malkov said a residential building had been damaged in a drone attack and that drone debris had fallen on the grounds of an “industrial facility”, but did not mention the refinery.<\/p>\n

Months of Ukrainian long-range drone strikes on Russian refineries have aimed to deprive Moscow of the oil export revenue it needs to pursue the war.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Kyiv and its western allies say Russia is trying to cripple the Ukrainian power grid and deny civilians access to heat, light and running water for a fourth consecutive winter, in what Ukrainian officials call “weaponising” the cold.<\/p>\n

The plant was reconnected to a 330-kilovolt (kV) power line after an half-hour outage, but a 750 kV line is still disconnected, the IAEA said.<\/p>\n

Widespread military activities overnight affected Ukraine’s electricity grid and prompted operating nuclear power plants (NPPs) to reduce output, the IAEA added.<\/p>\n

<\/a>Railway hub near Kyiv targeted in Russian drone attack<\/p>\n

A railway hub near Kyiv was attacked during a large-scale Russian drone and missile attack that damaged the depot and railway carriages, Ukrainian state railway company Ukrzaliznytsia said on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The railway did not report any casualties from the overnight attack in the town of Fastiv.<\/p>\n

Russia has intensified its attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector and infrastructure in recent weeks, targeting power stations and railway hubs.<\/p>\n

Power and heat generation facilities in Chernihiv, Zaporizhzhia, Lviv, and Dnipropetrovsk regions were targeted in the attack, Ukraine’s ministry for development of communities and territories said.<\/p>\n

It said on Telegram that 9,500 customers remained without heat and 34,000 without water supply in the southern Odesa region.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s ambassador to the UK has said that Russia had \u201cnothing to do with\u201d the Salisbury poisoning attack, despite an official report concluding that President Vladimir Putin \u201cmust have\u201d authorised the use of the deadly nerve agent. <\/p>\n

Ambassador Andrei Kelin said he did not have a message for the family of Dawn Sturgess, who was killed after coming across the poison in 2018. <\/p>\n

He said: \u201cIt\u2019s a tragic death, it is of course sad and Russia has nothing to do with it\u201d. <\/p>\n

He claimed that instead the poisonings of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter were staged by the British government and secret services. <\/p>\n

He added: \u201cIt has been done by very talented professionals. It reminds me of Ian Fleming or even Agatha Christie\u201d. <\/p>\n

Retired Supreme Court judge Anthony Hughes, who carried out the review into Ms Sturgess\u2019s death, found that the attempted assassination of Mr Skripal <\/a>\u201cmust have been authorised at the highest level, by President Putin\u201d and said that the GRU agents were \u201cacting on instructions\u201d when they carried out the attack. <\/p>\n

The report concluded that the attempted assassination of Mr Skripal was not \u201cdesigned simply as revenge against him, but amounted to a public statement…that Russia will act decisively in what it regards as its own interests\u201d. <\/p>\n
