Earlier this week, Quentin Tarantino went on the attack, striking, with his most powerful weapons\u2014his very large mouth, and the powerfully nasal voice that lurks within it\u2014at society\u2019s biggest active problem at the moment: Paul Dano\u2019s performance in 2007 Oscar-winner There Will Be Blood<\/a>. As we reported previously<\/a>, Tarantino went no-holds-barred on Dano in an appearance on Bret Easton Ellis\u2019 podcast, calling him \u201ca big, giant flaw\u201d in Paul Thomas Anderson\u2019s movie, \u201cthe weakest fucking actor in SAG,\u201d and, of course, \u201cthe limpest dick in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which was a pretty wild swing, not just because Dano is a perfectly fine, and often a very good, performer, but also because this level of weirdly personal attack falls pretty far outside regular Hollywood norms. To the point that a whole lot of people\u2014almost none of whom have actually namechecked Tarantino\u2019s comments, which also took swipes at Matthew Lillard and Owen Wilson\u2014have spoken up to assert that, no, Paul Dano is not the world\u2019s limpest dick. For instance: Matt Reeves, who directed Dano as the jittery Riddler in his 2022 comic book noir flick\u00a0The Batman<\/a>, who recently stated on Twitter<\/a> that Dano is \u201cAn incredible actor, and an incredible person.\u201d Or Ben Stiller, who directed Dano in 2018 Showtime crime drama\u00a0Escape At Dannemora<\/a>, who self-censored himself with \u201cPaul Dano is f-ing brilliant.\u201d<\/a> (Shang-Chi\u00a0star Simu Liu, who\u2019s never worked with Dano, but who has chimed in before when Tarantino runs his mouth<\/a>, wrote that, \u201cidk man i think paul dano is an incredible actor.\u201d)<\/p>\n

We do think it\u2019s kind of amusing that all of these observations are being offered seemingly out of the blue, with no one acknowledging that they\u2019re responding to Tarantino\u2019s unexpected tirade. (Alec Baldwin got the closest, writing, \u201cIf you don\u2019t love Paul Dano, shh.\u201d) Per Entertainment Weekly<\/a>, the most interesting, and specific, defense came from Dano\u2019s There Will Be Blood\u00a0co-star Colleen Foy, who said on Threads that she actually sat behind Tarantino at the film\u2019s cast and crew screening, and that \u201cHe was legit vibing with Paul\u2019s performance. His recent comments are incongruent with his reaction that night.\u201d<\/p>\n

As we go to press, no high-profile Hollywood celebrities have similarly spoken up in defense of Matthew Lillard\u2019s dick.<\/p>\n
