Scientists have now come up with a novel way of repairing our neural wiring.<\/p>\n<p>A team led by University of Pisa biologist Sara De Vincentiis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/scientists-grew-mini-brains-from-stem-cells-then-the-brains-sort-of-developed-eyes\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">used mini-brains<\/a> grown in a lab to test a technique they&#8217;re calling &#8220;nano-pulling&#8221;, using tiny magnetic particles controlled by magnetic fields to guide axons (connective nerve fibers) into place.<\/p>\n<p>With further development, the researchers believe this approach could help restore the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nigrostriatal_pathway\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">nigrostriatal pathway<\/a>, a vital connection in motor control that is compromised in  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IYl\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73029\" data-postid=\"168125\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Parkinson&#8217;s<\/a> patients.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This study demonstrates the potential of nano-pulling as an emerging technique to promote directed reinnervation within the central nervous system,&#8221; the researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/advs.202500400\" style=\"letter-spacing: -0.025em;\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> in their published paper.<\/p>\n<p>Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-discovery-suggests-we-could-have-an-fda-approved-treatment-already?utm_source=SA_article&amp;utm_campaign=related_link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Parkinson&#8217;s Discovery Suggests We Could Have an FDA-Approved Treatment Already<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Parkinson&#8217;s disease is partially the result of damage to brain cells that make the chemical messenger dopamine. Transplanting dopamine-producing tissue has <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1016\/S1474-4422(12)70295-8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shown some promise<\/a> as a therapy, but these new cells struggle to hook themselves up to host brain tissue once they&#8217;re in place.<\/p>\n<p>Some gentle coaxing with magnetic particles could help fix that problem, and get us another step closer to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-discovery-suggests-we-could-already-have-an-fda-approved-treatment\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">effective treatments<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/NeuronImagery.jpg\" alt=\"Mini-brain images\" width=\"642\" height=\"324\" class=\"wp-image-168128 size-full\"   loading=\"lazy\"\/>Mini-brains were used to test the effects of nano-pulling. (De Vincentiis et al., Adv. Sci., 2025)<\/p>\n<p>Nano-pulling was shown to increase axon length and get connectors moving in the right direction. It also made the cells more stable, and produced more of the axon branches and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Synaptic_vesicle\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">synaptic vesicles<\/a> (tiny packages of neurotransmitters) that are required to build neuron links and eventually restore the nigrostriatal pathway.<\/p>\n<p>As an added bonus, the magnetic particles used in the experiment have been approved safe for use in medical procedures, including  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/magnetic-resonance-imaging\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73063\" data-postid=\"168125\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">MRI<\/a> scans. No damage was seen in the mini-brains used by the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We successfully achieved guided neurite growth, resulting in increased neurite length and branching, thereby reinforcing the versatility and potential therapeutic applications of this technique,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/advs.202500400\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s no cure yet for Parkinson&#8217;s disease, but we&#8217;re getting better at understanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/parkinsons-disease-might-not-start-in-the-brain-study-finds\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">how it gets started<\/a> and the different risk factors involved. Like  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/go\/IaO\" class=\"lar_link lar_link_outgoing\" data-linkid=\"73015\" data-postid=\"168125\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_self\">Alzheimer&#8217;s<\/a>, it&#8217;s a complex disease, and it can be difficult to distinguish between causes and the consequences of having it.<\/p>\n<p>Work continues to find treatments that can stop Parkinson&#8217;s or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/this-is-the-first-time-drug-shows-signs-of-slowing-parkinsons-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">slow it down<\/a>. As with this latest study, a lot of the focus is on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/new-drug-may-prevent-cognitive-decline-in-parkinsons-disease\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">protecting the brain<\/a> from damage, and trying to get dopamine production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/nanoparticles-reverse-parkinsons-in-mice-by-healing-damaged-dopamine-cells\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">back up and running<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parkinson&#8217;s disease is the second most frequent age-related neurodegenerative disease globally,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/advs.202500400\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">write<\/a> the researchers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Parkinson&#8217;s disease prevalence has doubled over the past 25 years, with an alarming rise to 13 million patients <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.3233\/JPD-181474\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">projected by 2040<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The research has been published in <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1002\/advs.202500400\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Advanced Science<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Broken connections between brain cells play a critical role in multiple neurodegenerative conditions, including Parkinson&#8217;s disease.
