{"id":337656,"date":"2025-12-08T21:07:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T21:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/337656\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T21:07:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T21:07:11","slug":"treasury-secretary-bessent-predicts-us-will-end-2025-with-3-gdp-growth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/337656\/","title":{"rendered":"Treasury Secretary Bessent predicts US will end 2025 with 3% GDP growth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Speaker of the House Mike Johnson joins Varney &amp; Co. to address criticism of Republican leadership, the Supreme Court upholding Texas congressional map, the affordability issue and more.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/government-and-institutions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent<\/a> said he expects the U.S. to end the year with a better-than-expected 3% gross domestic product (GDP) growth.<\/p>\n<p>Bessent appeared Sunday on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/scott-bessent-treasury-secretary-face-the-nation-transcript-12-07-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS News&#8217; &#8220;Face the Nation&#8221;<\/a> and was asked by host Margaret Brennan about whether President Donald Trump was wrong to predict this spring that Americans may buy &#8220;two dolls instead of the 30 dolls&#8221; and that &#8220;maybe the two dolls will cost a couple of bucks more than they normally would.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The economy has been better than we thought,&#8221; Bessent replied.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve had the 4- 4% GDP growth in a couple of quarters. (Eric Lee\/Bloomberg via Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. economy has been volatile in 2025 amid\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/tariffs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">increases in tariffs<\/a> and changes in immigration policy.<\/p>\n<p>First-quarter GDP showed a contraction of 0.6%, caused in part by a surge of imports to get ahead of tariffs taking effect.<\/p>\n<p>The second quarter saw real GDP rise at an annual rate of 3.8% in the April through June period, which the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) noted mainly reflected a decrease in imports.<\/p>\n<p>With that data, the U.S. economy had an annualized growth rate of about 1.6% in the first half of 2025.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/economy\/september-2025-pce-inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">FED&#8217;S FAVORED INFLATION GAUGE SHOWS CONSUMER PRICES REMAINED ELEVATED IN SEPTEMBER<\/a><\/p>\n<p>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/shoppers-at-a-grocery-store.jpg\" alt=\"Shoppers looking at grocery prices\"\/> <\/p>\n<p>Americans have been pessimistic about the economy amid high prices and stubborn inflation. (Justin Sullivan\/Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p>The federal government shutdown from Oct. 1 to Nov. 15 delayed the BEA&#8217;s release of third-quarter GDP data, with the initial estimate delayed until Dec. 23.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/the-fed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Federal Reserve<\/a> Bank of Atlanta&#8217;s GDPNow estimate of real GDP in the third quarter projected that, as of Dec. 5, third-quarter GDP increased 3.5%. That would leave GDP for the first three quarters of 2025 at about 2.2%.<\/p>\n<p>Brennan also asked Bessent about polling showing that Americans disapprove of the Trump administration&#8217;s handling of the economy and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/inflation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">issues like inflation<\/a>, and whether the administration needs to show that it feels the pain of Americans struggling economically.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/politics\/trump-calls-affordability-a-democrat-scam-inflation-concerns-persist-nationwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">TRUMP CALLS AFFORDABILITY &#8216;A DEMOCRAT SCAM&#8217; AS INFLATION CONCERNS PERSIST NATIONWIDE<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The treasury secretary criticized the media coverage of the rise in inflation during the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/category\/joe-biden\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Biden administration<\/a> and said that &#8220;affordability has two components: there is inflation, and then there is real incomes. Real incomes are up about 1% and what we&#8217;re not going to do is say that Americans don&#8217;t know what they&#8217;re feeling.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Democrats created scarcity, whether it was in energy or overregulation, that we are now seeing this affordability problem, and I think next year we&#8217;re going to move on to prosperity,&#8221; Bessent said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I said that the Biden administration created the worst inflation in 50 years, and maybe for working Americans, the worst inflation of all time.
