{"id":339237,"date":"2025-12-09T16:01:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T16:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/339237\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T16:01:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T16:01:11","slug":"china-threat-narrative-a-complete-mislabelling-jin-keyu-says","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/339237\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018China threat\u2019 narrative a \u2018complete mislabelling\u2019, Jin Keyu says"},"content":{"rendered":"<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">A prominent economist has dismissed the \u201cChina threat\u201d phenomenon as a \u201ccomplete mislabelling\u201d, arguing that the country has instead supported the global diffusion of technology by significantly lowering costs through production at scale.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a summit on Tuesday, <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/economy\/china-economy\/article\/3278425\/economist-jin-keyu-why-trade-war-still-gift-china?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Jin Keyu<\/a> \u2013 a professor of finance at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology \u2013 also said China\u2019s proposals for its next five-year plan indicate Beijing recognises the need to rebalance its economy and better harmonise with the rest of the world in a process she added will require patience.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWe have to recognise that the other angle is not China as a threat, but China as a great benefactor of the diffusion of technology around the world,\u201d she said at the Global Supply Chain Business Summit in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">She described China as a \u201chuge contributor\u201d to the proliferation of advanced technology, which she called \u201cessential\u201d for developing economies seeking to catch up with the rest of the world.<\/p>\n<p>Jin attributed this to the country\u2019s enormous manufacturing and innovation capacity, giving China the lion\u2019s share of credit for the roughly <a target=\"_self\" class=\"e1yy41x40 ef9u0v01 css-1ankfgb ecgc78b0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/science\/article\/3239251\/future-looks-bright-new-chinese-designed-solar-cell-provides-renewable-energy-breakthrough?module=inline&amp;pgtype=article\" title=\"\" data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">90 per cent drop<\/a> in solar panel prices observed in recent years.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">She also noted Beijing\u2019s transition to a more consumption-driven economy and efforts to curb \u201cinvolution\u201d \u2013 the cutthroat, low-quality competition that has driven down profits in several industries \u2013 reflect an awareness of a need to rebalance.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cIt\u2019s not going to be easy.
