{"id":339348,"date":"2025-12-09T17:11:15","date_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/339348\/"},"modified":"2025-12-09T17:11:15","modified_gmt":"2025-12-09T17:11:15","slug":"australia-launches-youth-social-media-ban-it-says-will-be-the-worlds-first-domino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/339348\/","title":{"rendered":"Australia launches youth social media ban it says will be the world&#8217;s &#8216;first domino&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"anchor-9a6c16\" class=\"body-graf\">Can children and teenagers be forced off social media en masse? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/china\/japan-australia-urge-calm-chinese-radar-jets-rcna247812\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Australia<\/a> is about to find out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9416c4\" class=\"body-graf\">More than 1 million social media accounts held by users under 16 are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/australia\/youtube-australia-teen-social-media-ban-rcna247124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">set to be deactivated<\/a> in Australia on Wednesday in a divisive world-first ban that has inflamed a culture war and is being closely watched in the United States and elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0df417\" class=\"body-graf\">Social media companies will have to take \u201creasonable steps\u201d to ensure that under-16s in Australia cannot set up accounts on their platforms and that existing accounts are deactivated or removed.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-cb2b68\" class=\"body-graf\">Australian officials say the landmark ban, which lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/world\/australia-passes-landmark-social-media-ban-children-16-rcna181124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">swiftly approved late last year<\/a>, is meant to protect children from addictive social media platforms that experts say can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/health\/health-news\/social-media-mental-health-anxiety-depression-teens-surgeon-general-rcna85575\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">disastrous for their mental health<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-84fc15\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWith one law, we can protect Generation Alpha from being sucked into purgatory by predatory algorithms described by the man who created the feature as \u2018behavioral cocaine,\u2019\u201d Communications Minister Anika Wells <a href=\"https:\/\/minister.infrastructure.gov.au\/wells\/speech\/address-national-press-club-canberra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">told the National Press Club<\/a> in Canberra last week.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-8f65e6\" class=\"body-graf\">While many parents and even their children have welcomed the ban, others say it will hinder young people\u2019s ability to express themselves and connect with others, as well as access online support that is crucial for those from marginalized groups or living in isolated parts of rural Australia. Two 15-year-olds have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/australian-teenagers-ask-high-court-block-social-media-ban-rcna246021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">brought a legal challenge<\/a> against it to the nation\u2019s highest court. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-e557ad\" class=\"body-graf\">Supporters say the rest of the world will soon follow the example set by the Australian ban, which faced fierce resistance from social media companies.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-275709\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019ve always referred to this as the first domino, which is why they pushed back,\u201d Julie Inman Grant, who regulates online safety as Australia\u2019s eSafety Commissioner, said at an event in Sydney last week.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/251201-social-media-2-rs-d0c9b2.jpg\" alt=\"AUSTRALIA-INTERNET\" height=\"1667\" width=\"2500\"\/>Schoolboys use their mobile phones in Melbourne, Australia, in November 2024.William West \/ AFP via Getty Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3f9a5c\" class=\"body-graf\">Social media companies will be responsible for enforcing the ban, paying fines of up to 49.5 Australian dollars (about $32 million) for serious or repeated breaches. Children and parents will not be punished for any infringements. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-197e77\" class=\"body-graf\">Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, X, Snapchat and Reddit are all set to be age-restricted under the law, according to a list shared by the eSafety Commissioner. All of the platforms have said they will comply, and some have taken action before the ban even takes effect, with Meta saying last month that it would <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/instagram-facebook-cut-16s-australia-social-media-ban-rcna244914\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">start closing Instagram, Threads and Facebook accounts<\/a> on Dec. 4.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-4b9cf4\" class=\"body-graf\">The ban has broad support in Australia, where a YouGov poll last year found that 77% of respondents were in favor of it. Supporters say it will encourage children to prioritize in-person interactions, boosting their social skills.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c66f9d\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSocial media is a misnomer,\u201d said Jen Hummelshoj, 45, mother of 12-year-old Nina. \u201cThe apps want kids to be focused on their phone and not their friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c7077a\" class=\"body-graf\">Nina does not have a phone or any social media accounts. She supports the ban\u2019s intent, arguing that social media is an overpowering distraction for young people.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-9bd9a5\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWhen I\u2019m trying to chat to someone, they might say, \u2018Just a minute,\u2019 and they\u2019re doing something on social media,\u201d she said in a phone interview from Canberra.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b95461\" class=\"body-graf\">According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/newsroom\/media-releases\/latest-esafety-research-reveals-social-media-use-is-widespread-among-kids-and-so-are-the-harms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">national study<\/a> the Australian government commissioned this year, 96% of children ages 10 to 15 use social media. Seven out of 10 of them have been exposed to harmful content and behavior, including misogynistic material, fight videos and content promoting eating disorders and suicide.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-bdc204\" class=\"body-graf\">One in 7 also reported having experienced grooming-type behavior from adults or older children, and more than half said they had been the victims of cyberbullying.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-304e41\" class=\"body-graf\">William Young, 14, said most social media platforms, in their current form, were unsafe for children, citing Snapchat as an example.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-675a2f\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cYou can friend anyone without knowing who they are. It deletes messages after they\u2019ve sent. \u2026  It\u2019s just not a good platform,\u201d he said in a phone interview from Perth.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-effe55\" class=\"body-graf\">He implored the affected platforms to \u201cdo right\u201d by young people and prioritize making their platforms safer.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-658b17\" class=\"body-graf\">The platforms say they share that goal and insist that the ban will actually make young users less safe.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-879436\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDisconnecting teens from their friends and family doesn\u2019t make them safer \u2014 it may push them to less safe, less private messaging apps,\u201d Snap <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.snap.com\/australia-social-media-minimum-age-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said in a statement<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/1740671061361_now_mnn_break_from_tech_health_benefis_250227_1920x1080-r7ti6j.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b72044\" class=\"body-graf\">The platforms also argue that young users may turn to new, unregulated apps that push them into darker corners of the internet or may try to circumvent the ban by using virtual private networks, or VPNs, which Australian teenagers do not dispute.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-7557b9\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cYoung people are going to find another way around it,\u201d Chloe Song, 14, said in a Zoom interview from Melbourne. \u201cStrict parents create, like, sneaky kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f85d81\" class=\"body-graf\">She said she and her peers would benefit more from better digital literacy programs in their schools.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-813846\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cThe next generation is in our hands,\u201d said Chloe, who is a member of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.projectrockit.com.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Project Rockit<\/a>, a youth-driven Australian movement against bullying, hate and prejudice. <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fa3d79\" class=\"body-graf\">If young people are blocked from social media, \u201cwe just don\u2019t learn the life skills and we don\u2019t learn the experience of going through and knowing what\u2019s safe and what\u2019s not,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-1bfd06\" class=\"body-graf\">Susan Grantham, a social media researcher at Griffith University in Brisbane, described the ban as a \u201cstep in the right direction\u201d but not a solution on its own.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-07a421\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cSocial media is not going away. Instead, we need to create well-balanced digital citizens,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-a7b0cf\" class=\"body-graf\">What rankles many young Australians about the ban is what Noah Jones described as a lack of consultation on \u201clegislation that specifically affects us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f6b1c9\" class=\"body-graf\">Noah, 15, one of two teenagers suing the Australian government over the ban, said he and his peers have \u201csolutions to all the negatives of social media.\u201d <\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-0796e8\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cIf we just got asked, we all could\u2019ve worked it out,\u201d he said in emailed comments.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-fcc844\" class=\"body-graf\">Noah argues the ban will deny young people freedom of political communication, an implied right in Australia\u2019s constitution, and deprive them of an essential educational tool.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3ab7a1\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cDo you want 15-year-old boys to have no clue about consent? Do you want teenagers who don\u2019t know about the dangers of vaping? Both topics I\u2019ve learned about on social media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-da0424\" class=\"body-graf\">Wells, the communications minister, said that the center-left government would not be intimidated by legal challenges and that it \u201cremains steadfastly on the side of parents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-c0b8e6\" class=\"body-graf\">Others are relieved by the ban, including Aalia Elachi and her father, Dany.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-3aea04\" class=\"body-graf\">Dany Elachi said Aalia\u2019s behavior changed within days of her receiving a smartphone at age 10.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-b2c68e\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cWe found that she retreated into her room, into her own private world, her own private space, and we didn\u2019t think that was, in the long run, going to be healthy for her,\u201d he said in a phone interview from Sydney.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-100e51\" class=\"body-graf\">When the phone malfunctioned after a couple of months, Aalia\u2019s parents never replaced it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-df6670\" class=\"body-graf\">Now 16, Aalia will be able to legally use social media, but she has never had any accounts and said that is not about to change.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-03c696\" class=\"body-graf\">\u201cI\u2019m still as tech literate as the next 16-year-old. I just don\u2019t have TikTok or Instagram eating up hours of my childhood every day,\u201d Aalia told lawmakers in the state of New South Wales last month.<\/p>\n<p id=\"anchor-f79f37\" class=\"endmark body-graf\">\u201cHaving firm boundaries around social media hasn\u2019t made my life smaller,\u201d she said. \u201cMy hope is over the next few years, I won\u2019t be the exception, but the norm.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Can children and teenagers be forced off social media en masse?
