North Carolina Gov. Josh Stein is calling on the federal
\ngovernment to reverse a change that could limit student loan funding for
\ncertain nursing programs.<\/p>\n

On Tuesday, Stein urged Secretary of Education Linda McMahon
\nto reverse November\u2019s decision he claims would make it more difficult for
\npeople to pursue many professional and graduate-level health care degree
\nprograms.<\/p>\n

The State Board of Nursing says about 13,000 students are
\ncurrently enrolled in nursing programs.<\/p>\n

Citing
\nfindings from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/a>, Stein\u2019s
\noffice said North Carolina will face a shortage of nearly 12,500 registered
\nnurses and slightly more than 5,000 LPNs by 2033.<\/p>\n

A September report found
\na 13% vacancy rate for registered nurses statewide<\/a>, and 15% in rural
\ncounties \u2014 higher than the 10% national average.<\/p>\n

The new federal rules are tied to President Donald Trump\u2019s
\nOne Big Beautiful Bill. Starting in July 2026, it would lower how much students
\nin advanced nursing programs can borrow.<\/p>\n

Stein said reduced loan access could make it harder for
\nnursing students to enroll in programs.<\/p>\n

WRAL News sent an email to the White House to ask if the
