There are 56,000 of them, representing the wealthiest 0.001% of the planet. The entry ticket to this exclusive club: at least \u20ac254 million in assets. Together, they now own three times more than the poorest half of humanity, or 2.8 billion adults. While the gap has stabilized since the end of the Covid-19 pandemic, it has grown sharply over recent decades: Back in 1995, the 0.001% held &#8220;only&#8221; twice as much as the poorest half.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--lf \">The data comes from <a href=\"https:\/\/wir2026.wid.world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" title=\"Nouvelle fen\u00eatre\">a report by the World Inequality Lab (WIL)<\/a>, a research institute based at the Paris School of Economics, to be published on Wednesday, December 10. Le Monde reviewed the report ahead of its release. Following previous editions in 2018 and 2022, the nearly 200-page assessment, co-directed by economists Thomas Piketty, Lucas Chancel, Ricardo Gomez-Carrera and Rowaida Moshrif, provides a sweeping overview of inequality across the globe.<\/p>\n<p class=\"reading-mode-only \">You have 91.11% of this article left to read.
