The next generation of one of the NBA\u2019s most celebrated families is officially headed to the Big Ten, but not for basketball. Kapri Garnett<\/a>, the 6-foot-4 daughter of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer Kevin Garnett, has committed<\/a> to the University of Michigan to play collegiate volleyball, carving out her own highly athletic path.<\/p>\n

The Michigan Wolverines announced<\/a> that Kapri Garnett, an opposite hitter from Calabasas, California, is one of four athletes joining the program as part of the 2026 signing class. Her commitment takes on special meaning given her father\u2019s history with the university.<\/p>\n

Decades before Kapri\u2019s signing, Kevin Garnett, the former NBA champion and 15-time All-Star, was on the verge<\/a> of becoming a Wolverine himself. Though he ultimately made history by jumping straight from high school to the NBA in 1995, Garnett has since revealed that Michigan was one of his top two college choices, largely influenced by the program’s iconic “Fab Five” era and his admiration for Chris Webber.<\/p>\n

Now, Kapri will fulfill that collegiate dream in the family. The NBA legend celebrated his daughter’s decision on social media, simply tweeting<\/a>, “Go Blue!” with a celebratory emoji, acknowledging her choice to continue the family’s athletic lineage at the Big Ten institution he once considered.<\/p>\n

The younger Garnett is already a standout <\/a>on the volleyball court. Playing for Campbell Hall, she recorded 209 kills in her senior season, averaging 2.9 kills per set, and added 35 blocks, showcasing the physicality that runs in the family. She is considered the No. 51 overall recruit in the state of California for her class.<\/p>\n

Michigan Head Coach Erin Virtue enthusiastically welcomed the recruit, noting her tremendous potential.<\/p>\n

\u201cKapri comes from an incredibly athletic lineage and knows what it takes to compete at the highest level,\u201d Virtue said in a statement released by the university. \u201cWhile she’s still developing in the game of volleyball, her combination of physicality, height, and competitive mentality gives her enormous upside. Kapri Garnett, whose primary role is as a front-row attacker, joins the Wolverines program<\/a> with high expectations as she prepares to start her collegiate career in the fall of 2026. The commitment not only adds a high-potential player to the Wolverines roster but also brings the Garnett name to Ann Arbor, completing a long-anticipated family connection with the Michigan athletic program.
