\n\tAs Kevin Smith<\/a> revisits one of his most controversial titles for a long-overdue sequel, the View Askewniverse<\/a> creator has some ideas for new faces he\u2019d like to cast.<\/p>\n

\n\tFollowing Dogma<\/a> (1999) star Alan Rickman<\/a>\u2018s death at age 69<\/a> in 2016, Smith recounted a \u201ccrossover moment\u201d he experienced with the late actor, which gave him the idea of who should portray his angel character Metatron.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI want to write it for Helen Mirren<\/a>. She is incredibly Alan-adjacent,\u201d Smith explained on the SlashFilm<\/a> podcast. \u201cShe\u2019s not playing Metatron, but she plays this movie\u2019s version of Metatron.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tNoting he met Mirren \u201cyears ago\u201d through Rickman, Smith explained that it\u2019s a kismet choice. \u201cWhen I was thinking, \u2018Well, I don\u2019t have Alan,\u2019 at one point I was like, \u2018Well, Adam Driver looks like a young Alan Rickman, just taller,’\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBut then I was like, no. Then I thought, \u2018You know what? Helen Mirren<\/a>, aside from being one of my favorite actors on the planet, I had that crossover moment with her and Alan at one point.\u2019 As a writer and a romantic, you\u2019ll make any connection or any justification you can,\u201d added Smith. \u201cBut it started me thinking, maybe it would be Helen Mirren. So I\u2019m writing it for Helen Mirren.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAdditionally, Smith is ready to introduce The Devil into his unholy world, and he has just the actor in mind. \u201cI worked with a kid years and years ago, and he was so sweet \u2014 nice boy, very talented \u2014 and then he went and became super famous. Whenever I write the Devil, I think of Austin Butler<\/a>,\u201d he noted of the actor, who appeared in his 2016 movie Yoga Hosers.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEspecially after Dune, man. His Feyd was pretty badass,\u201d added Smith. \u201cBut our Devil is \u2026 he\u2019s not like arched eyebrow insidious. He\u2019s sexier than that. He\u2019s like a grunge rocker. And I think Austin could pull that off pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tButler wouldn\u2019t be the most surprising bit of casting in the View Askewniverse, especially after Alanis Morissette<\/a> played God in the original religious satire.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn June, Smith told Deadline he \u201ccracked the story<\/a>\u201d for Dogma 2<\/a>, and he plans to make a \u201cCannes-worthy\u201d sequel after debuting the original movie there in \u201999 and most recently returning to the festival this year with the 4K remaster.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI will set a place at the table for everyone who was in the first movie who is still alive,\u201d said Smith. \u201cSadly, Alan and George [Carlin] won\u2019t be able to join us, but I\u2019ll set a place at the table for all of them.
