Late-night hosts recapped Donald Trump<\/a>\u2019s attempts to reassure Americans on the economy as the private sector sheds jobs and grocery prices keep rising.<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/p>\n

Seth Meyers<\/a> devoted his main segment on Wednesday\u2019s Late Night to the US economy, which has seen better days. \u201cCosts of everything, from food to electricity, are soaring while employers are shedding jobs,\u201d he explained. \u201cThis is when a president needs to show empathy and demonstrate that he knows the plight of hardworking Americans, and \u2013 oh no, as I\u2019m saying this I\u2019m remembering who I\u2019m talking about and realizing that there\u2019s no fucking way he\u2019s going to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

Instead the president, in an interview with Politico this week, gave the economy the grade of \u201cA+++++\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cNow I know that sounds tone-deaf, but in fairness, it\u2019s possible Trump was just glitching,\u201d Meyers joked. And \u201cit won\u2019t surprise you to learn that Trump\u2019s assessment of the economy is very much at odds with how pretty much everyone else feels about it\u201d.<\/p>\n

A new Fox News poll even found that 62% of Americans blame Trump for the current economic conditions. \u201cSo it\u2019s less of an A+++++ and more of an F minus minus minus minus,\u201d Meyers noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump is running up against the same problem Biden had: you can\u2019t convince people the economy is good when they can see the truth with their own eyes every time they buy their groceries or pay their heating bills,\u201d he concluded. \u201cTrump thinks he\u2019s crushing it but the American people think he\u2019s \u2013 \u201d as always, Meyers quotes a news anchor \u2013 \u201c\u2018sucking\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jimmy Kimmel<\/p>\n

In Los Angeles, Jimmy Kimmel<\/a> rolled back the tape on Trump\u2019s speech in Pennsylvania on Tuesday that was supposed to be about the economy but \u201cwas almost not at all about the economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hasn\u2019t been out for a while,\u201d Kimmel noted. \u201cIf he had talked for three more minutes, it would\u2019ve legally been classified an Avatar movie, that\u2019s how long he went on for.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the nearly three-hour speech, Trump delivered \u201call his greatest hits: windmills, Sleepy Joe, bing bing, all the crowdpleasers. He told the Maga faithful who are having trouble making ends meet that their kids don\u2019t need so many dolls or pencils. He said you only need a couple of dolls and one or two pencils. The guy who bedazzled this room in gold thinks your child has too many pencils at school.<\/p>\n

\u201cHis strategy, it seems, is to just keep saying things are great,\u201d Kimmel added. \u201cWhich is the same mistake Joe Biden made, by the way. You can\u2019t just tell people the economy is good when they\u2019re paying more for everything. We know how much things cost. People are looking at the price of apples with our eyes. And you\u2019re telling us to not see it. He wants us to be a bunch of not-sees.\u201d<\/p>\n

But the \u201cmost offensive\u201d thing he said was that he was \u201cbig with Black people\u201d because \u201cthey know a scam better than anybody\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s right, his father scammed them all the time,\u201d said an unamused Kimmel. \u201cWhen he says \u2018Black people\u2019, he means Hershel Walker and Kanye West and that\u2019s it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Stephen Colbert<\/p>\n

And on the Late Show, Stephen Colbert<\/a> celebrated \u201cthe holiday season\u201d when \u201ceveryone is out buying stuff\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, right now the most expensive thing you can do with stuff is buy it, because prices are up and Americans are not happy about it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Colbert cited a recent study that found 76% of Americans view the economy negatively, though CNN claimed that \u201cactually, things seem worse than they are,\u201d calling this a \u201cwindchill economy\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cWindchill because \u2013 I think we can all agree \u2013 2025 blows,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n

In other tough news for Trump, a new Fox News poll found that Trump has a 61% disapproval rating, while a different Politico poll found that 37% of Trump\u2019s own voters reported the worst cost of living in their lifetime. \u201cIt\u2019s gotta hurt more when it\u2019s his own voters,\u201d said Colbert. \u201cThey\u2019re supposed to love him no matter what. It\u2019s like your parents sitting you down and saying: \u2018Timmy, your mom and I are getting a divorce, and we want you to know: it\u2019s your fault.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

So, to \u201cconvince everybody that the bad economy is actually good\u201d, Trump addressed a crowd in Pennsylvania on Tuesday with \u201csome sound advice on how to save lots of money this holiday season\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to Trump, \u201cyou can give up certain products, you can give up pencils\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow much does he think pencils cost?\u201d Colbert wondered.
