After just two years of the 12-team College Football Playoff, many are already suggesting that the field should expand to include even more teams. That includes head coaches of the sport itself.<\/p>\n
One of these proponents for change is Nebraska<\/a> head coach Matt Rhule<\/a>, who called for more Playoff spots for teams from the Big Ten and the SEC on the latest episode of \u2018House Rhules<\/a>.\u2019 Rhule stated that due to the difficult schedules that teams from those two conferences play, their records are viewed more harshly than better records from weaker conferences.<\/p>\n Rhule, who is near the conclusion of his third season in charge in Lincoln, also suggested that 9-3 Michigan<\/a> and 9-3 USC<\/a> should have both received bids to a College Football Playoff this season. Both were left out and picked for bowl games instead.<\/p>\n \u201cObviously, when I was at Temple, I would have argued the other way,\u201d Rhule said. \u201cNow that I\u2019m in the Big Ten, though. It\u2019s not even the games you win and lose in the Big Ten. It\u2019s the toll it takes on your team to play in the SEC and Big Ten. We play nine conference Big Ten games and travel all across the country. As a result, we only have three teams in. You can\u2019t tell me USC or Michigan aren\u2019t better than some of the teams that made it in at 9-3.<\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s almost like \u2018Why are you going through the gauntlet of playing in the Big Ten and SEC?\u2019 I watch the tape and I\u2019m studying other conferences all the time. The SEC and the Big Ten, in my opinion, are just harder conferences. I\u2019d like to see more teams from those conferences, opposed to other ones. Expanding (the College Football Playoff) would be really cool. I think some play-in Games would be really cool. Some teams benefited from not being in a conference championship game, so I think in college football, the one thing we\u2019d like to see is uniformity. We all play the same amount of conference games and here\u2019s how the Conference Championship Game works.<\/p>\n \u201cTony Petitti from the Big Ten has said \u2018Let\u2019s have automatic qualifiers and have No. 1 play No. 2 and have No. 3 play No. 6. No. 4 play No. 5. Play your way on it.\u2019 You should have to win your way in, and I\u2019d love to see it. It would be such a great step forward.\u201d<\/p>\n Due to 8-5 Duke<\/a> winning the ACC Championship, two Group of Five teams (No. 11 Tulane<\/a> and No. 12 James Madison<\/a>) took up the final two at-large spots in the College Football Playoff.
