{"id":344909,"date":"2025-12-12T18:47:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-12T18:47:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/344909\/"},"modified":"2025-12-12T18:47:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T18:47:07","slug":"legionnaires-disease-found-in-n-j-hospital-water-system-after-patient-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/344909\/","title":{"rendered":"Legionnaires&#8217; disease found in N.J. hospital water system after patient death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3CGDWHTP25BJPHY535QQ6PRIMQ\">A New Jersey hospital is warning hundreds of patients to be on the lookout for symptoms of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.com\/news\/2023\/08\/nj-investigating-another-legionnaires-outbreak-in-north-jersey.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Legionnaires\u2019 disease<\/a> after a patient death led to the discovery of the potentially deadly bacteria in the facility\u2019s water system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"N3PDZFKM5ZAGFDANOPV6IDXTXQ\">The patient, whose identity was not released, was treated in July at <a href=\"https:\/\/stjosephshealth.org\/locations\/st-josephs-university-medical-center\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/stjosephshealth.org\/locations\/st-josephs-university-medical-center\/\">St. Joseph\u2019s University Medical Center<\/a> in Paterson for multiple medical conditions. The patient also tested positive for Legionella, a type of bacteria that can cause a serious form of pneumonia, according to a statement from <a href=\"https:\/\/stjosephshealth.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/stjosephshealth.org\/\">St. Joseph\u2019s Health<\/a>, which owns the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"JUBQER6QTJGVTP7274LM3P4NNQ\">\u201cWe have been working closely with state and local health officials after a patient was treated for multiple medical conditions and also tested positive for Legionella,\u201d Dr. Joseph Duffy, chief medical officer of St. Joseph\u2019s, said in a statement on Friday. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"SQ46A5RU5NFHDMHSM3WZKKHJ2M\">\u201cUnfortunately, due to the complex nature of this individual\u2019s medical condition, the patient succumbed to the illnesses,\u201d Duffy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T3EJNO262FDGTJVZQHLG5QJSZM\">Legionnaires\u2019 disease isn\u2019t contagious or spread person to person like the flu or COVID-19. Instead, it\u2019s typically spread via exposure to water or mist that\u2019s carrying Legionella bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"YBBHTLDCH5BQBG5DWYJSFSTSR4\">The patient\u2019s death prompted a state Department of Health inspection of the facility\u2019s water system. On Nov. 18, state testing revealed Legionella in the water supply of one contained area of the hospital.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HA7W7M2J7RDNTO3B2ODTNK5P2I\">Hospital officials did not reveal which area of the hospital was using the water system containing the bacteria.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PTXP6W3EQZC2NK76D3Z2O72JQM\">St. Joseph\u2019s was notified by the state on Dec. 8 of the test results and began cleaning and treating its water system, according to hospital officials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VHO5UQQC7BER5DVRCYTNXGM72A\">The health system is also in the process of notifying 228 former patients who were treated in that area of the hospital between Nov. 27 and Dec. 8 about the risk of infection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ANJCIVFM7JA7TCICYY5KGLM2IM\">Hospital officials said there\u2019s minimal risk of contracting the disease from the water supply. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LQWDEFMAIJEYJHT5PZ4PKKR66A\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/legionella\/about\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/legionella\/about\/index.html\">According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a>, Legionnaires\u2019 disease is a severe form of pneumonia or lung infection caused by the Legionella bacteria. It causes symptoms that can include fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle aches and headache. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"6UPV63VYYJEXJCXE6DN5JPXHKA\">Symptoms typically develop within 14 days of exposure, but it can take longer. Although most healthy people exposed to Legionella won\u2019t get sick, others are at an increased risk.
