{"id":346515,"date":"2025-12-13T14:35:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-13T14:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/346515\/"},"modified":"2025-12-13T14:35:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-13T14:35:07","slug":"csu-radio-station-transfer-to-ideastream-continues-trend-toward-nonprofit-control","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/346515\/","title":{"rendered":"CSU radio station transfer to Ideastream continues trend toward nonprofit control"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O524UZ2WOZHH5FM6HNQH4ODZE4\">COLUMBUS, Ohio &#8212; Cleveland State University\u2019s radio station transfer to Ideastream is just the latest Ohio student-radio station to switch hands to nonprofit control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ROM6V4PTWVAGDEA7SYJ5PRO66I\"><a href=\"https:\/\/clevelandmagazine.com\/articles\/wcsb-college-radios-shutdown-is-a-profound-loss-for-cleveland-s-creative-communities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In recent years<\/a>, the terrestrial signals for Denison and Wittenberg universities were transferred to public radio operators. Ohio Northern University sold its station and frequency to the Diocese of Toledo. Currently, there are about 18 student-run college radio stations in Ohio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VKZ4434F6ZBMJEQL7XHBJRCFDI\">Since the 1990s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/news\/2025\/10\/what-went-down-at-wcsb-893fm-a-voice-from-inside-cleveland-states-axed-student-radio-station.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/news\/2025\/10\/what-went-down-at-wcsb-893fm-a-voice-from-inside-cleveland-states-axed-student-radio-station.html\">dozens of universities across the country<\/a> have sold or leased their FM signals, citing budget pressures or \u201cstrategic partnerships.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NBUX6C5MNNB77KUOU7OJRP2M2Q\">This includes St. Olaf College\u2019s WCAL, which was sold to Minnesota Public Radio in 2004; University of San Francisco\u2019s KUSF, was abruptly pulled off air in 2011 and sold to the Classical Public Radio Network; and Georgia State\u2019s WRAS, which was given to Georgia Public Broadcasting for daytime hours in 2014, negotiated without student input.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NNZPWP473BBTNIOH6Y6J7TEYWQ\">But it is a disturbing trend, said Rob Quicke, founder of the College Radio Day and the College Radio Foundation, and director of the W. Page Pitt School of Journalism and Mass Communications at Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"L5UW5KDO7BD3LLY4F633T6BJXM\">Quicke and others began College Radio Day, observed every Oct. 3 &#8212; coincidentally the same day as when CSU pulled the plug on WCSB &#8212; to celebrate the contributions of college radio.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"MXHHEMNRVRBNRJMRG22N5JKCIM\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen this happen again and again, and this is a disturbing trend from my perspective, because once a university decides to take away the radio station from the students and give it to another entity, that\u2019s a huge ongoing loss that\u2019s going to affect future generations who won\u2019t have their voices heard,\u201d Quicke said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"J5YRENYZR5HU5JIU7YHJ33HB2I\">College administrators, including those at CSU, hand off student stations without fully realizing the value they provide to students, the university and the community. At the same time, public radio organizations &#8211; which most frequently take over the stations &#8211; are eager, Quicke said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ZYX334DQ6ZHZ7IXDY2PKWKOHC4\">\u201dThere\u2019s clearly value in these college radio stations. Otherwise, these public radio stations wouldn\u2019t want them,&#8221; he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"3LFJYITR45ETTDFPZEQFWN5NDU\">WCSB programming was \u201cflash cut\u201d to Ideastream at 11 a.m. on Oct. 3, meaning the signal stopped originating from the WCSB Broadcast Operations Center in the Cole Center at 3100 Chester Ave. in Cleveland and immediately began airing from Ideastream Public Media\u2019s studio in Cleveland\u2019s Idea Center, 1375 Euclid Ave. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"Q7SQPXFEB5DYDB6CCZR4ZNSBEQ\">While students and community volunteers aired a variety of music and talk programs on WCSB &#8211; 89.3 FM, Ideastream converted the station to JazzNEO, a 24\/7 jazz station that had digitally broadcast since February 2024. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"S3EVJIOHZBBZZH4WM4JYTWN4K4\">For students and community members, the announcement was unexpected, as the school provided no warning they were pulling the plug until the transfer occurred. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2CZPRJSMORFVZK5GXBWTZ3RJHE\">Since then, students and community members <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/education\/2025\/10\/students-community-decry-authoritarian-takeover-of-csu-radio-station-by-ideastream.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">have protested the decision<\/a>. New information shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/open\/2025\/10\/ohio-sunshine-law-violation-could-overturn-cleveland-states-wcsb-radio-deal-legal-expert-says.html \" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/open\/2025\/10\/ohio-sunshine-law-violation-could-overturn-cleveland-states-wcsb-radio-deal-legal-expert-says.html \">CSU may have violated state sunshine laws<\/a> in closed-door meetings with Ideastream. CSU signed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/education\/2025\/11\/csu-ideastream-non-disclosure-pact-reveals-6-months-of-secret-talks-on-radio-station-deal.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a nondisclosure agreement<\/a> six months before the transfer, which kept discussions over the transaction under wraps. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ESIVDWITWRBXFLLU6ZP4OTFQZE\">University officials tend to underestimate the value of their student radio stations, said Quicke of College Radio Day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"PVPONO4JU5FQTAFNIUXPX46RL4\">\u201cA university could spend $10,000 on a mail drop of leaflets or postcards, or you can actually put that money into the college radio station, which often is broadcasting athletics and culture programs and talk shows and local music and events,\u201d he said. \u201cYou\u2019re going to end up having a far larger reach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"TXQT67YQCFCTPG44O5IKZKQR6M\">There\u2019s still a lot of people who listen to the radio, Quicke said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"4BECCEDUYFHTJDHILKBBV2MNKY\">\u201cThis is one of the things that we fight against continually, not just for the College Radio Foundation, but generally, even within my academic field of radio and audio, the idea that radio is dead.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R3WKVSIXVBFX5OJT4ETXXUC3DQ\">\u201cIt\u2019s not dead just because it\u2019s an old medium with a storied legacy and history. Radio is a place that people turn to in times of crisis,\u201d Quicke said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"KAIUT3P5FRBNRKQTUSJCJWAMXE\">This lack of understanding of the station\u2019s value is why CSU didn\u2019t demand any money from Ideastream, Quicke said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"O6GFNJ5D7JHFNDXUNFJUTS7MEQ\">CSU is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/education\/2025\/10\/cleveland-state-gives-up-wcsb-radio-station-to-ideastream-for-free.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/education\/2025\/10\/cleveland-state-gives-up-wcsb-radio-station-to-ideastream-for-free.html\">only getting 1,000 aired announcements<\/a> that the university is the station\u2019s licensee and underwriter of WCSB, Ideastream\u2019s classical station WCLV and television station WVIZ. CSU President Laura Bloomberg gets a seat on Ideastream\u2019s board. Additional aired messages will recognize CSU and Ideastream\u2019s strategic collaborations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T533DYARTFGTTEP3W7OHNDTMUE\">\u201cThat pales in value to what the students actually had, which was their own broadcast entity,\u201d Quicke said. <\/p>\n<p>Denison\u2019s The Doobie<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7EHUVDE7VZCT5JW5LXPR2T5M6Q\">While CSU handed WCSB operations to Ideastream <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/education\/2025\/10\/cleveland-state-gives-up-wcsb-radio-station-to-ideastream-for-free.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/education\/2025\/10\/cleveland-state-gives-up-wcsb-radio-station-to-ideastream-for-free.html\">without receiving a dime<\/a>, WOSU Public Media paid Denison University $5,000 to purchase some equipment for the 2020 transfer of WDUB-91.1 FM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/2020\/01\/03\/wosu-radio-planning-to-expand\/1964938007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.dispatch.com\/story\/entertainment\/2020\/01\/03\/wosu-radio-planning-to-expand\/1964938007\/\">the Columbus Dispatch reported<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"IL7DVLOP6FAY7KBLJVBT2D4TO4\">Denison is a liberal arts school in Granville, about an hour east of Columbus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"5E5RQ7OWDBHIZCHQ5SLOLI5HVA\">Furthermore, WOSU was to provide paid internship opportunities to Denison students \u2013 a provision that was not guaranteed in the CSU-Ideastream agreements. In late October, as public outrage against CSU continued, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/open\/2025\/10\/cleveland-state-launches-panel-to-seek-student-activity-with-wcsb-amid-ideastream-transfer-backlash.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the university announced a committee<\/a> that would design experiences for students to participate in the radio station. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"T5GI5DMBVZBGNFMW7VCYHR2KQE\">Perhaps most importantly, the Denison student-run station \u2013 known as \u201cThe Doobie,\u201d after its former call signals of WDUB \u2013 lives on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doobieradio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">with online streaming<\/a>. At the time of the station transfer to WOSU, the station was off air due to new Federal Communications Commission regulations the school considered too burdensome. Programming had already been streaming online. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2A3KFYQYRNGHZORJZDRAR233W4\">Quicke of College Radio Day said that the programming on college radio stations that solely broadcast online remains solid. But there are drawbacks, even if a college no longer has to comply with FCC regulations. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"RA6GD4YUGVDOHCIIQG7EJI6YRY\">\u201cWhen you (online) stream only there\u2019s a high degree of intentionality that the audience has to have in order to find you,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you\u2019re on the radio, people can stumble upon you. They can still go through the dial and find you that way. I think colleges and universities disingenuously say, \u2018Well, listen, you can stream.\u2019 It\u2019s a huge loss to a radio station if you had the FM terrestrial license. That\u2019s as legitimate as you can get as a broadcasting entity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"75HWMHPUMBC5XFOLGGK3JVE5PM\">Today, The Doobie continues to host its annual music festival, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doobieradio.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Doobie Palooza<\/a>, and publishes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doobieradio.com\/doobie-magazine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Doobie Magazine<\/a>, about music trends and the Central Ohio music scene. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"P3BM4D4A6VCS5AA7GHO75PWTMU\">Cleveland.com | The Plain Dealer reached out to CSU spokespeople, asking why the WCSB wasn\u2019t streaming online at the time of the transfer, and whether that could be a way to resurrect the station. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"R6OH4GAMKVE3JPPV3JL2ZBCZ7Y\">\u201cThe former student run radio station at CSU functioned as a recognized student organization,\u201d said Kristin Broka, CSU\u2019s associate vice president of marketing and communications. \u201cLike all student organizations, there are practices, guidelines, policies and procedures that they are required to follow. The student organization can and will determine their preferred activities to advance student engagement on our campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wittenberg and ONU<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7FAWTJHVWRCODBXQI5J52KVK7I\">Wittenberg University, based in Springfield, reached an agreement in 2017 with Dayton Public Radio Inc. for WUSO &#8211; 89.1 FM to broadcast the public radio station\u2019s content eight hours a day, from 6 a.m. until 2 p.m., seven days a week, said Karen Gerboth, Wittenberg\u2019s vice president of marketing and communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"LRPNTJWIDBG3DAT72JKQBDBXXU\">Dayton Public Radio eventually expanded to full-day simulcasting with the signal. In 2023, the college transferred the FCC license to the organization. Today, Dayton Public Radio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discoverclassical.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">broadcasts classical music<\/a> from the signal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"OXJEJQJHYJDUVIX7664ZCM2OME\">\u201cWe had considered a digital station back in 2023, but we never moved forward as student interest was not there to pursue this extracurricular option,\u201d Gerboth said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"NSXEXKOP5NADPIIQEBDBARCHBI\">An hour southwest of Toledo in Hardin County, students ran WONB- 94.9 FM from campus at Ohio Northern University, from 1991 through 2020.
