New mums and their families have said a specialist service giving them mental health support has been “absolutely amazing”. <\/p>\n
The perinatal service at Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCFT) consists of one inpatient ward at Chorley Hospital, and three community teams at Lancaster, Leyland and Blackburn.<\/p>\n
Following an unannounced inspection in August, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) gave the service an “outstanding” rating. <\/p>\n
Inspectors said mothers and their babies were provided “exemplary care, with staff going above and beyond to ensure women and their babies were cared for exceptionally well”.<\/p>\n
This was CQC’s first inspection since the service was registered with them in 2018.<\/p>\n
They rated it as outstanding for being responsive, caring and well-led, and rated good for being safe and effective.<\/p>\n
Inspectors found the staff were open and involved people in planning their care and making sure they understood their options.<\/p>\n
They were highly motivated and consistently felt well-supported by leaders, had effective working relationships with teams including midwives, health visitors and GPs.<\/p>\n
Inspectors also praised the wide range of activities taking place on the inpatient ward, including baby massage and story time for mothers to develop self-confidence and parenting skills.<\/p>\n
Gemma Berry, CQC deputy director of operations in the north-west, said: “Leaders and staff at this service should be very proud of the findings of this report. <\/p>\n
“It’s clear the service was committed to treating women as individuals and ensuring they receive exemplary care and support during their pregnancy and afterwards. <\/p>\n
“Other services should look to this report to see if there’s anything to learn from it.”<\/p>\n
