Montrose<\/a>.<\/p>\n“Everybody’s out, the old saying, if it’s brown, it’s down today,” said Jeff Scavazzo.<\/p>\n
It’s been a good two weeks for owner Jeff Scavazzo and his staff.<\/p>\n
Last year, Scavazzo says hunters from across the area brought in 1,068 deer; this year, he expects to exceed that number.<\/p>\n
“We are pushing toward 1000 right now. Beginning of the week when it was really, really cold, a lot of the guys didn’t go out. We’re only grabbing maybe 1012 a day, but today we got close to 55 in already.”<\/p>\n
From summer sausage, Slim Jims, and kielbasa, owner Jeff Scavazzo says this year they’ve been able to feed customers and area veterans.<\/p>\n
In its second year, the Venison for Vets program, started by Scavazzo, has donated over 900 lbs of venison so far.<\/p>\n
“I’d love to see the community come together, and they’re all rallying behind every time I go to the store, I say, Hey, you’re doing venison for vets this year? I said, Absolutely, we are. They said, OK, we want to bring 3 or 4 deer over and donate.”<\/p>\n
As he prepares for a few more donated deer and the last few stragglers to bring in their buck or doe. Scavazzo looks forward to the lull as he prepares for the next hunting season.<\/p>\n
