{"id":349851,"date":"2025-12-15T09:46:09","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T09:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/349851\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T09:46:09","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T09:46:09","slug":"former-footballer-left-suicidal-during-alcoholism-and-gambling-battle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/349851\/","title":{"rendered":"Former footballer left suicidal during alcoholism and gambling battle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The ex-professional footballer has spoken out on attempting to take his life twice over a 13-year period while battling his addiction to alcohol and gambling.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Clarke-Carlisle-talks-suicide.jpg\" alt=\"Clarke Carlisle has opened up about his struggles\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Clarke Carlisle has opened up about his struggles(Image: Newcastle Chronicle)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Former professional footballer Clarke Carlisle has spoken out during a Scots rehab session about how he became suicidal during a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">struggle with alcoholism and gambling.<\/a> The 46-year-old played for clubs such as Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United, and Burnley in his <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">17-year career.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The defender, who later became chairman of the Professional Footballers\u2019 Association, struggled with alcoholism and gambling and made two attempts on his life over a 13-year period. He revealed all on podcast episode Listen Up, made by Abbeycare &#8211; one of the UK\u2019s leading residential <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">rehabilitation centres.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Carlisle attended a rehab session at St Mirren FC\u2019s stadium in Paisley, Renfrewshire, and spoke on the podcast while visiting Scotland. He said as a child he was \u201canchored in external validation\u201d from his father, and later depended on approval from managers and fans, using<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\"> alcohol as a release.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_Clarke-Carlisle-of-Queens-Park-Rangers.jpg\" alt=\"Carlisle showing off a Superman t-shirt during a game between Queens Park Rangers and Colchester United held on September 28, 2002 at Loftus Road\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Carlisle showing off a Superman t-shirt during a game between Queens Park Rangers and Colchester United held on September 28, 2002 at Loftus Road(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The footballer, who won three caps for the England under-21 national team, recalled that \u201ceverything was tied into football\u201d and his sense of<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\"> self-worth<\/a> was dependent on performance on the pitch. Carlisle, from Preston in Lancashire, said: \u201cIf I played well then I was a good human and I was allowed to smile, and I could go home and be nice to my family. If I played poorly, I was a bad human.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">In 2001, he suffered a knee injury and recalled having only one day <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">sober<\/a> per week over more than a month. He recalled drinking a crate of beer and two bottles of wine per day he ordered to his home, and chain-smoking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Carlisle said: \u201cI sat on a futon and drank myself into oblivion. I placed that order probably six days a week for a five-week period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said around this time he attempted to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">take his own life<\/a>, but recovered from the injury and continued playing football for 12 years. After retiring in 2013, he said he went through \u201cthe longest and deepest depressive episode of my life\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He made another attempt on his life in 2014, and spent six weeks in <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">hospital<\/a> after being hit by a lorry, suffering a shattered knee and internal bleeding. Carlisle said he lived with the notion that \u201cwithout football I was no-one\u201d, and felt he was \u201can abject failure without football\u201d, which was compounded by being identified and asked by a stranger: \u201cDidn\u2019t you used to be Clarke Carlisle?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">After staying at Blackburn Psychiatric Hospital he was introduced to cognitive analytic therapy, and began to regain control. Carlisle, who is married and has three children from previous relationships, advised others struggling with mental health to seek professional <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">help<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">He said: \u201cThere are literally thousands of people who are qualified and trained to be invested in your wellness. What they are going to do is hear you, and guide you on the pathway to your potential solution. Go there first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The ex-footballer spoke to Eddie Clarke, outreach manager at Abbeycare, who praised Carlisle\u2019s willingness to open us about <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/news\/uk-world-news\/i-wanted-die-football-hero-5108683\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" rel=\"follow nofollow noopener\" tabindex=\"0\">addiction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/0_West-Bromwich-Albion-v-Queens-Park-Rangers-Premier-League.jpg\" alt=\"Clarke Carlisle at The Hawthorns on April 4, 2015\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Clarke Carlisle at The Hawthorns on April 4, 2015(Image: Getty Images)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Mr Clarke, who hosts the podcast, said: \u201cClarke\u2019s story shows the devastating impact that unaddressed addiction issues can have, even on those who are outwardly successful and widely admired. As he said himself during our interview, he is extremely lucky to be alive to tell people about his experiences, and we are very grateful that he has.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">\u201cHis willingness to share these deeply personal moments will help others struggling to understand that they are not alone, and that recovery is possible.
