{"id":349976,"date":"2025-12-15T11:29:08","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T11:29:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/349976\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T11:29:08","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T11:29:08","slug":"why-a-yellowstone-grizzly-eating-bison-brains-is-so-interesting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/349976\/","title":{"rendered":"Why A Yellowstone Grizzly Eating Bison Brains Is So Interesting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Grizzlies feasting on big game carcasses is nothing new, but it was a rare occurrence when a big male bear called Ojo decided to treat himself to bison brains, scooped right from the skull.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He was one of four males gathered around the carcass in late October. That\u2019s when grizzlies were in their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2024\/09\/28\/yellowstone-bears-are-in-pig-out-mode-eating-20-000-calories-a-day\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2024\/09\/28\/yellowstone-bears-are-in-pig-out-mode-eating-20-000-calories-a-day\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">pig-out phase<\/a>\u00a0called hyperphagia. That\u2019s when they gobble down as\u00a0much as\u00a0they can, piling on fat for hibernation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">And Ojo apparently thought the brains were a special treat, because he still had plenty of other options when it was his turn to feast, wildlife watcher and photographer April Holm of Idaho told Cowboy State Daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThey (the other grizzlies) had been into the stomach area, but there was still lots of meat on the carcass when Ojo started to eat into the skull,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Ojo has only one eye. It\u2019s not known how he lost the other one, Holm said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">She and her husband, Patrick, frequently visit Yellowstone and Grand Teton national parks, getting material for their Holm On The Range wildlife photography and video business.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>Why The Brains?<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">A grizzly going after brains on a carcass seems\u00a0to be quite rare, retired federal ecologist Chuck Neal of Cody told Cowboy State Daily.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">He has spent countless hours afield in grizzly country and has seen\u00a0plenty of\u00a0carcasses picked over by bears.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cSeldom is the head bothered at all,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">All bears species are intelligent, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/06\/27\/dont-let-their-brawn-fool-you-wyoming-grizzlies-are-smarter-than-average-bears\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2023\/06\/27\/dont-let-their-brawn-fool-you-wyoming-grizzlies-are-smarter-than-average-bears\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">grizzlies are next-level smart<\/a>, Neal and other experts previously told Cowboy State Daily. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Grizzlies are also \u201chighly individualistic,\u201d with their own survival tricks and particular tastes, Neal said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">So cracking skulls to get at brains might\u00a0be\u00a0something Ojo figured out at some point, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cIt\u2019s quite possible, and even likely, that a particular bear has discovered foods that are important to him, and that other bears don\u2019t know about,\u201d Neal said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Even with the immense strength of a grizzly, it would be difficult to get through a thick bison skull, Neal said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">However, brains could hold considerable nutritional\u00a0reward,\u00a0being especially high in fats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Like many other species, \u201cbears need fats and carbohydrates\u201d to properly digest and absorb the protein from red meat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">In humans, eating just red meat alone leads to a potentially fatal condition called \u201crabbit starvation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">So named, because people have reportedly starved to death eating just the meat from rabbits, but not getting the fats and other nutrients required to properly process the protein in the meat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">That\u2019s why one expert previously told Cowboy State Daily that if somebody in a wilderness survival situation caught a porcupine for meat, they should consider also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2024\/06\/07\/how-eating-porcupine-brains-can-save-your-life-when-lost-and-starving-in-wyoming\/\" title=\"https:\/\/cowboystatedaily.com\/2024\/06\/07\/how-eating-porcupine-brains-can-save-your-life-when-lost-and-starving-in-wyoming\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">eating the brain<\/a>, along with other fatty internal organs.<\/p>\n<p>Bears, The Ultimate Dietary Opportunists\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">When it comes to food, grizzlies are\u00a0opportunists, and they aren\u2019t picky, Wyoming Game and Fish Large Carnivore Specialist Dan Thompson told Cowboy State Daily.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">&#8220;Bears have high dietary plasticity and are not picky.\u00a0 If enough people watch enough bears through a long enough time they&#8217;ll probably watch them do all kinds of interesting things and tell stories about it to their friends,\u201d\u00a0he said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">&#8220;Bears or the epitome of adaptability and opportunism when it comes to what they eat and nothing surprises me when it comes to bears finding food,\u201d\u00a0Thompson added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Gang Of Four Grizzlies Gets Along, Mostly<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Holm said that Ojo wasn\u2019t the only famous Yellowstone grizzly gorging on the carcass that day, although he was apparently the only one with a taste for brains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">Strangely enough, there weren\u2019t any knock-down, drag-out fights between the four males, she said. Just a few bluff charges and some growling and snapping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">\u201cThey more or less took turns on the carcass,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"_1uhbe1z1 _1uhbe1z0\">An elder grizzly, aptly called Old Man, was also there.
