{"id":351008,"date":"2025-12-15T23:35:07","date_gmt":"2025-12-15T23:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/351008\/"},"modified":"2025-12-15T23:35:07","modified_gmt":"2025-12-15T23:35:07","slug":"three-children-dead-in-ottawa-eastern-ontario-region-after-flu-related-complications","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/351008\/","title":{"rendered":"Three children dead in Ottawa, Eastern Ontario region after flu-related complications"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Three children have died from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/flu-covid-cold-rsv\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/flu-covid-cold-rsv\/\">influenza<\/a>-related complications in the Ottawa and Eastern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/ontario\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/topics\/ontario\/\">Ontario<\/a> regions in the first two weeks of December, regional medical officers of health said Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The medical officers for the two health units said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/eohu.ca\/en\/article\/2025-12-15\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/eohu.ca\/en\/article\/2025-12-15\">statement<\/a> the deaths of the children, between the ages of 5 and 9, are a \u201cstark reminder\u201d that flu can lead to severe illness and complications that require hospital care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWith much of the respiratory illness season still ahead, we anticipate this will continue to be a challenging flu season,\u201d their statement said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The medical officers of heath, Dr. Paul Roumeliotis for Eastern Ontario and Dr. Trevor Arnason for Ottawa, also reported a \u201crapid and significant rise\u201d in influenza-A across the country\u2019s most populous province, adding the Children\u2019s Hospital of Eastern Ontario in Ottawa has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cheo.on.ca\/en\/news\/cheo-sees-concerning-rise-in-flu-cases-and-hospitalizations.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.cheo.on.ca\/en\/news\/cheo-sees-concerning-rise-in-flu-cases-and-hospitalizations.aspx\">reported<\/a> higher-than-usual flu cases and complications for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWith much of the respiratory illness season still ahead, we anticipate this will continue to be a challenging flu season,\u201d according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Pediatric influenza cases are reported each year but it is unusual for regional medical officers of health to issue a statement about the deaths of three children within a short period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-doctors-urge-people-to-get-flu-vaccine-as-ottawa-hospital-sees-a-surge\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Doctors urge people to get flu vaccine as Ottawa hospital sees a surge in cases<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">A report in the Journal of Pediatrics in July <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0022347625001349\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0022347625001349\">identified<\/a> 80 pediatric influenza-associated deaths in Canadian children\u2019s hospitals from 2004 to 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">While most people who are infected with the flu recover, children under 5, people with immune-compromising conditions and adults over 65 are at greater risk of severe complications, including death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Infectious-disease physicians have warned about an aggressive flu season, pointing to concerns about lower vaccine uptake and a \u201cmismatched\u201d vaccine that may offer less protection against the dominant circulating strain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">National surveillance <a href=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/respiratory-virus-surveillance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/health-infobase.canada.ca\/respiratory-virus-surveillance\/\">data<\/a> indicate influenza activity is increasing rapidly. The latest data for the week ending Dec. 6, showed a positivity rate of 20.2 per cent, with 6,799 confirmed cases.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThe percentage of tests positive for influenza is increasing quickly,\u201d the report said. \u201dLaboratory detections are predominantly influenza A and among subtyped influenza A detections, influenza A(H3N2) is predominant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The report also said that of volunteers who participate in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/flu-influenza\/fluwatcher.html#a1\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/flu-influenza\/fluwatcher.html#a1\">FluWatchers,<\/a> a national volunteer program that gathers information on influenza activity, 3 per cent reported cough and fever.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">It also said a total of 1,850 confirmed hospitalizations over respiratory problems in participating provinces and territories reflected an overall weekly rate of 5.5 hospitalizations per 100,000 population.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/canada\/article-hospitals-intense-flu-season-doctors-urge-vaccine\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Hospitals prepare for intense flu season as doctors urge public to get vaccine<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The Surveillance Program for the Rapid Identification and Tracking of Infectious Diseases in Kids, which tracks real-time trends in respiratory viruses among children seeking hospital care, also <a href=\"https:\/\/dashboard.sprint-kids.ca\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/dashboard.sprint-kids.ca\/\">shows<\/a> greater influenza-A activity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">From Nov. 30 to Dec. 6, it recorded that 950 children were tested with 462 positive cases (49 per cent). For Dec. 7 to 13, 284 were tested and 145 positive (51 per cent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Public health officials say everyone who is six months and older should get the flu vaccine.
