Reba McEntire<\/a> and Rex Linn almost had a different happy place for their engagement.<\/p>\n

In fact, the continent of Africa is so special to the couple, that Rex kept trying to propose his Happy\u2019s Place costar while the duo were on vacation there last year. But as it happened, the opportunity never presented itself. <\/p>\n

\u201cI took the ring with me,” Rex told host Drew Barrymore<\/a> during a joint interview with Reba on The Drew Barrymore Show<\/a> Dec. 11. “The moment that I found a little area I thought I was good\u2014we had an African guide named Mumps, and I came around the corner one evening.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the 69-year-old recalled, he told their guide that he was thinking about proposing to the country singer, but hadn\u2019t \u201cfound a place yet.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2019But, you know, we were driving back down this road, and over on the left side there was a little body of water down there,\u2019\u201d he told Mumps, \u201c\u2019and kind of a pretty meadow, and I was thinking about doing that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, as their guide explained, the area was probably not the best choice for a proposal. <\/p>\n

\u201cHe just looks at me,\u201d Rex recounted, \u201cand goes, ‘Well, brother, that’s sort of an evening migratory walkway for male leopards. It wouldn’t be a good time.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

And that revelation sealed the deal for him to scrap his original plans. <\/p>\n

“I knew then that I was done looking for another spot,\u201d he joked. \u201cI thought, ‘Yeah, you know what, I’ll just back off that one.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Luckily, Rex finally found the perfect time to propose to the 70-year-old on Christmas Eve in 2024<\/a>, although the couple didn\u2019t confirm the news until September of this year<\/a>. <\/p>\n

And as Reba\u2014who was previously married to Charlie Battles from 1976 to 1987 and to Narvel Blackstock from 1989 to 2015\u2014explained, she and Rex are very much looking forward to their upcoming nuptials. <\/p>\n

“It\u2019ll be a lot of fun,\u201d she shared with E! News in November<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be a nontraditional wedding because that\u2019s Rex and me. We like comfort, we love friends, we love food.\u201d <\/p>\n

And while they are excited about getting married, Rex shared that the two aren\u2019t rushing down the aisle just yet. <\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we\u2019re doing right now honestly is enjoying our engagement time,\u201d Rex explained to E!. \u201cWe haven\u2019t set a date, we\u2019re just going to enjoy our engagement and enjoy going to Happy\u2019s Place every day.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reba McEntire<\/a> first met her special somebody Rex Linn on the set of Kenny Rogers’ 1991 movie The Gambler Returns: The Luck of the Draw, in which she played lead Burgundy Jones and he made a cameo.<\/p>\n

“He gets a big kick out of it,” the country music star recalled on Today<\/a> in April 2023. “He says his part was riding into a saloon on a 4-year-old colt and going, ‘Yeehaw!’ and riding out.”<\/p>\n

Over the years, the two stayed in contact as friends. However, Reba was already married to Narvel Blackstock\u2014becoming stepmom to his kids Shawna, Chassidy and Brandon Blackstock<\/a> after tying the knot in 1989 and welcoming son Shelby Blackstock<\/a> the following year\u2014and it would be decades before she and Rex struck up a romance.<\/p>\n

January 2020<\/p>\n

Four years after Reba and Narvel divorced<\/a> near the end of 2015, she crossed paths with Rex again. This time, it was on Young Sheldon, where she made a guest appearance and he had a recurring role.<\/p>\n

“Rex texted me and said, ‘You going to be in town?'” Reba recalled on The Jennifer Hudson Show<\/a> in July 2025. “I said, ‘Yeah.’ He said, ‘Well, let’s go to dinner.'”<\/p>\n

After enjoying a meal with friends, the actress continued, they headed to a wine bar, where Reba ordered some tater tots and Rex determined, “That’s your nickname from here on out.”<\/p>\n

Luckily for fans of the Tots (she’s “Tater Tot” and he’s “Sugar Tot”), there’s a photo from that special night.<\/p>\n

“Had a fantastic dinner with this Oklahoma girl,” Rex wrote on Instagram<\/a> in January 2020. “Tater Tots and Ketchup included.”<\/p>\n

January 2020 – June 2020<\/p>\n

With their romance beginning at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Reba and Rex were forced to date long-distance. However, this enabled them to connect on a deeper level.<\/p>\n

“Because of the pandemic, we didn’t get to see each other from January to June 16, but we created an intimacy by texting and talking over the telephone that we wouldn’t have gotten if we had been together all that time,” the singer explained to E! News<\/a> in April 2024. “So it was very special, and it was a great way of finding out about each other without ever touching. We’ve been pretty much inseparable since June 16 of 2020. It was a wonderful way to get to know each other better.”<\/p>\n

October 2020<\/p>\n

Reba and Rex went public with their relationship that fall.<\/p>\n

“It’s good to have a person to talk to, laugh with, get into subjects about what’s going on, discussions about our past, our family, funny stories, him being an actor, me being an actress,” the Grammy winner said while confirming their romance on an October 2020 episode of her podcast Living & Learning<\/a>. “He’s very into my music. I’m very into his career. It’s just great getting to talk to somebody who I find very interesting, very funny, very smart and is interested in me, too.”<\/p>\n

That same month, Reba and Rex gave fans glimpses into their life together, posting photos of them from their time in Montana<\/a>.<\/p>\n

November 2020<\/p>\n

Soon afterwards, the “I’m a Survivor” artist and the CSI: Miami actor made their red carpet debut as a couple at the 2020 CMA Awards, which she hosted.<\/p>\n

Fans got more insight into Reba and Rex’s romance when he was a guest on her podcast the following year.<\/p>\n

During their discussion, they looked back at how they’ve leaned on each other during tough times, which include the March 2020 death of Reba’s mother Jacqueline McEntire after her battle with cancer.<\/p>\n

“It was later on that I was texting you, and I told you about mamma\u2014that we just found out that she had bladder cancer,” the musician said on the October 2021 episode of Living & Learning. “And you said, ‘Hey, you just feel free to call me anytime you need to talk.’ And I just quit texting and then we’ve been talking ever since.”<\/p>\n

Rex also remembered how Reba called him and offered her condolences after his mother died in 1998.<\/p>\n

“We talked for about 25 minutes, and I never forgot it,” he added. “It was amazing, it was uplifting, it was really special and little did I know 20 years later, 21 years later I’d be doing the same thing with her on the phone.”<\/p>\n

The couple had a fancy night out at the 2022 Oscars, where Reba performed “Somehow You Do.” <\/p>\n

In August 2022, it was announced that Reba and Rex were taking their love to the small screen by playing married couple Sunny and Buck Barnes on Big Sky.<\/p>\n

“We love working together because when we’re at home, we get to practice, rehearse and he’s a rehearsal schedule freak,” Reba told ABC Audio in 2022<\/a>. “He makes sure I know my lines before I ever go on stage.” <\/p>\n

November 2022<\/p>\n

\"<p>November Reba celebrated Rex’s birthday with a sweet tribute.<\/p>\n

“Happy birthday to the love of my life!” she wrote on Instagram<\/a> in November 2022. “So glad we get to celebrate together!”<\/p>\n

“It’s adorable and oftentimes … we’re taking a five-minute break or we’re having breakfast or lunch and you look over and we have a bar set\u2014it takes place at Happy’s Place\u2014and you look over and they’re in a booth at the bar,” Melissa Peterman, who also starred on Reba, told People<\/a> in October 2024. “And it looks like they’re legitimately on a date at a restaurant just sitting together being so adorably cute.”<\/p>\n

In fact, Reba noted she could see them being happy long term as husband and wife.<\/p>\n

“Totally, if that’s what Rex wants,” the “What If” artist, who was married to Charlie Battles before her union with Narvel, told E! in April 2024. “I’ve been married twice. After the second one dissolved, I don’t have much faith in being bound by a piece of paper or a ring. But I’m truly committed to Rex. So if that’s something he feels totally strong about, that’s fine with me. He’s never been married before. So if he wants to experience that, I’m OK with that.”<\/p>\n
