{"id":351797,"date":"2025-12-16T09:34:11","date_gmt":"2025-12-16T09:34:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/351797\/"},"modified":"2025-12-16T09:34:11","modified_gmt":"2025-12-16T09:34:11","slug":"maui-county-awarded-3-6m-epa-grant-to-build-first-waste-collection-centers-in-west-maui-maui-now","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/351797\/","title":{"rendered":"Maui County awarded $3.6M EPA grant to build first waste collection centers in West Maui : Maui Now"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>\n<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/recycling-center-1-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-366332\"\/>Maui Now file photo.<\/p>\n<p>The US Environmental Protection Agency has selected Maui County to receive a $3.6 million Solid Waste Infrastructure for Recycling (SWIFR) grant to establish the first-ever waste collection centers in West Maui.<\/p>\n<p>The $3,607,05 grant\u00a0will support the development of two new collection sites expected to divert at least 1,794 tons of materials annually from landfills and illegal dump sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis project addresses the critical need for collection centers in West Maui communities that were impacted by the 2023 wildfires,\u201d\u00a0said\u00a0EPA Pacific Southwest Land, Chemicals, and Redevelopment Division Director Claire Trombadore.\u00a0\u201cThanks to this grant, the community will be able to reduce illegal dumping, divert more waste from their landfills, and help Maui create a waste system fit to the unique realities of an island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW AD<\/p>\n<p>According to the EPA, Maui County will use the funding to acquire two strategically located parcels in Upper West Maui and develop waste collection centers for green waste, recyclables and large and bulky items. The facilities are intended to reduce landfill disposal of materials including aluminum cans, glass bottles, cardboard, freon-containing and non-freon containing appliances, green waste, scrap metal, auto tires, lead acid batteries, paper, plastic, electronics and propane tanks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis recognition reflects not only the importance of strengthening our island\u2019s recycling and materials management systems, but also the EPA\u2019s confidence in our community\u2019s commitment to environmental stewardship,\u201d\u00a0said Maui Mayor Richard Bissen.\u00a0\u201cThe opportunity to advance this vital work\u2014improving sustainability, protecting our \u02bb\u0101ina and building a cleaner, more resilient future for West Maui\u2014is a distinct honor and a meaningful milestone for our county.
