Earlier this month, Claude, San Francisco\u2019s famed albino alligator and the \u201cunofficial mascot\u201d of the California Academy of Sciences, suddenly passed away<\/a>. He was 30, and died of liver cancer.<\/p>\n Now District 7 Supervisor Myrna Melgar is hoping to memorialize Claude\u2019s legacy<\/a> by renaming a city street \u201cClaude the Albino Alligator Way\u201d \u2014 and she\u2019s letting the public weigh in.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cClaude was an icon of a public figure \u2014 that\u2019s why we need a public process to decide how to honor him,\u201d Melgar said. \u201cThis process will give the public direct influence over how we as a city commemorate his legacy and keep him in our hearts.\u201d<\/p>\n Want the latest on the Mission and San Francisco? See our map below for the streets up for consideration for renaming by the city, all of which neighbor the California Academy of Sciences, where Claude lived for 17 years. Then use the tool below to vote for your preferred street.\u00a0<\/p>\n On Tuesday, Melgar will introduce a resolution to commemorate Claude. Once we close this poll on Dec. 31, Melgar\u2019s office will officially send the results to the Recreation and Parks commission, which will ultimately decide which street receives the new name.
