Every few weeks, goaltender Devin Cooley\u2019s mantra, which we first learned when he was with the San Jose Sharks, goes viral.<\/p>\n

“Nothing matters, nobody cares, we’re all going to die.”- Devin Cooley pic.twitter.com\/Mo63PkG4KJ<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 B\/R Open Ice (@BR_OpenIce) November 20, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n But before he was with the San Jose Sharks and his current team, the Calgary Flames \u2013 where he\u2019s now selling merchandise with his iconic phrase on it, with the proceeds going to Parachutes for Pets<\/a> \u2013 Devin Cooley played two seasons with the Milwaukee Admirals, the second of which was alongside current San Jose Sharks goaltender Yaroslav Askarov.<\/p>\n That same thoughtfulness informed Cooley\u2019s relationship with Askarov.<\/p>\n During that 2022-23 season, Cooley played 26 games at a .909 Save %, while Askarov saw 48 games with a .911 Save %.<\/p>\n Askarov was just 20, playing in his first season of North American hockey.<\/p>\n And Cooley, 25 at the time, clicked right away with the Russian youngster, despite Askarov\u2019s inability to speak English.<\/p>\n Askarov said he appreciated how patient Cooley was with him early on \u2013 and still is.<\/p>\n \u201cNot every guy\u2019s like that. Because some guys just don\u2019t give a fuck about how quick you speak, or how slow you speak, especially it\u2019s not my first language,\u201d Askarov said. \u201cThe first couple years, it\u2019s hard to explain something, and it usually takes time. Some guys just go away, but he\u2019s been the type of guy [who waits], and I respect it.\u201d<\/p>\n Cooley didn\u2019t let any language barrier get in the way of connecting with his goalie partner, something he said he always tries to do because, \u201cNo one really understands goalies like other goalies.\u201d<\/p>\n
