THE DALLES, Ore. \u2014 Cleanup crews worked Wednesday to clear debris from a damaged medical facility after severe winds tore through The Dalles in the early morning hours, leaving part of the roof scattered across a roped-off parking lot.<\/p>\n
The Water’s Edge facility, operated by Adventist Health Columbia Gorge, sustained extensive structural damage that will force the closure of outpatient clinics serving 150 to 175 patients daily, officials said.<\/p>\n
“The damage is extensive,” said Jayme Thompson, head of Adventist Health Columbia Gorge. “We didn’t truly understand the total estimate of damage until we actually walked through the building later in the day and realized the severe damage both structurally and to the roof.”<\/p>\n
The facility houses outpatient clinics for orthopedics, cardiology, internal medicine and primary care, among other things. Health officials are working to relocate services and reschedule appointments, though no timeline has been set for reopening of the building.<\/p>\n
Four people were inside during the storm \u2014 one employee and three patients undergoing overnight sleep studies. All were evacuated safely before fire department arrival, Thompson said.<\/p>\n
Thompson said hospital leaders are grateful the damage occurred overnight when the facility was largely empty.<\/p>\n
“Just trust that we’re doing everything we can to relocate our clinics and get [patients] access to care as soon as possible,” she said.<\/p>\n
Wasco County commissioners declared a state of emergency following the storm. Officials said many county roads remain closed due to downed trees and debris.\u00a0<\/p>\n
