Home Alone’s villainous burglars are truly on-screen Christmas<\/a> miracles, a doctor reveals.<\/p>\n

Adam Taylor, a professor of anatomy at Lancaster University, calls the Wet Bandits ‘medical impossibilities’ for their ability to survive a barrage of brutal attacks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the real world, the booby traps set by\u00a0Kevin McCallister (played by\u00a0Macaulay Culkin<\/a>)\u00a0would cause catastrophic neck injury, brain herniation, coma and death.<\/p>\n

But the fact the two villains\u00a0Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern) get up and carry on ‘without lasting injuries’ is beyond the realm of reality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘In short, Harry and Marv are walking medical impossibilities,’ Professor\u00a0Taylor says in a new piece for The Conversation<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Even if they appeared outwardly fine, the internal damage would probably be devastating.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

The first two Home Alone films are widely considered among the most heartwarming of festive films \u2013 despite featuring scene after scene of brutal violence.<\/p>\n

Harry and Marv endure countless assaults from paint cans, falling bricks, exploding toilets, electric wires and Kevin’s homemade flamethrower.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the two films, the villains are electrocuted, crushed by a\u00a0shelf of paints, thrown onto the roof of a car, and\u00a0burned on a scalding hot doorknob.<\/p>\n

They’re also ambushed with metal tools, fired at with stapes at close range, and set alight with a flamethrower (which caused Pesci serious burns<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Perhaps most shockingly, in the second film Marv is hit in the face four times with bricks thrown by Kevin from the roof of a building.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Instead of being knocked out cold,\u00a0Marv writhes on the ground like a snake and emits a series of high-pitched squeaks before eventually getting to his feet.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Professor Taylor, such assaults ‘involve levels of force that would be catastrophic in real life’ and ‘are not things a human body can simply shrug off’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The academic takes one booby trap as an example \u2013 where Marv gets hit in the head by a 100lb (45kg) bag of cement connected to a rope.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘A rough calculation of the forces involved when a 100lb bag of cement strikes the head suggests instant fatal injury,’ he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘The neck simply cannot absorb that level of force.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Blows to the head from the likes of bricks and bags of cement also risk brain herniation, where swollen brain tissue is forced into spaces it does not belong.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘This can compress areas that control breathing and movement, often leading to coma and death,’ the expert adds.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But head injuries are only part of the problem, as many of Kevin\u2019s traps would place ‘enormous stress on the chest and major blood vessels’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Falling forward from a height, being crushed by heavy objects, or being struck in the torso can cause severe internal injuries,’ he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘These forces are commonly seen in high-speed, head-on car crashes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘In extreme cases, the impact can rupture the aorta, the body\u2019s main artery, which is almost always fatal.’\u00a0<\/p>\n

Being crushed by a shelf of tins full of paint, for example, could result in ‘serious internal injury’, while\u00a0paint in the eyes can cause chemical burns and blindness.<\/p>\n

When Marv grabs taps attached to an arc welder, he is exposed to electrical current that causes his muscles to contract uncontrollably.<\/p>\n

Again, the fact we see his skeleton is a cartoon-inspired touch that’s not based in reality (electricity does not make the skeleton visible as there is no X-ray radiation).<\/p>\n

Overall, surviving Kevin’s festive booby traps would require ‘extraordinary luck, immediate trauma care, and months of rehabilitation’, according to Professor Taylor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Perhaps those lingering injuries explain why the Wet Bandits never made it back for another sequel,’ he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Britain’s most famous secret agent James Bond would have died several times over in real life due to a multitude of job-related risks, a study shows<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Researchers analysed all 25 of the James Bond films made by Eon Productions, starting from 1962’s ‘Dr No’ up to 2021’s ‘No Time to Die’.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In particular, they looked at whether the fictional agent ‘adhered to international travel advice’ during the 86 international journeys he made over the course of the films.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The experts found any real-life agent in Bond’s shoes would have suffered from sexually-transmitted infections (STIs), alcohol poisoning and infections from tropical diseases, as well as other hazards.\u00a0<\/p>\n

‘Overall, we found Bond poorly prepared for travel-associated health risks and particularly na\u00efve to the threat of infectious disease,’ the team reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n
