\n\tAnthony Mackie<\/a> appeared on \u201cThe Tonight Show\u201d to promote \u201cTwisted Metal\u201d Season 2, but the interview started with host Jimmy Fallon congratulating Mackie on his recent Emmy nomination for guest actor in a comedy series thanks to his performance in Seth Rogen\u2019s Apple TV+ series \u201cThe Studio.\u201d Mackie was on a set the morning of the Emmys<\/a> announcement and automatically assumed his white co-stars landed noms over him, per usual.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019m on set\u2026 and I look over and everybody\u2019s like \u2018Congratulations!\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Oh, what white dude got nominated?\u2019\u201d Mackie said. \u201cBecause I\u2019m the white dude legend when it comes to nominations and wins. I made Ryan Gosling famous. I made Jeremy Renner famous. I made Bryan Cranston famous. I now made Ron Howard famous! I\u2019m like, if you want to get nominated, I\u2019m the dude. You know what I mean?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMackie was referring to his long history of being snubbed by awards voters while his white co-stars land nominations instead. Mackie was Ryan Gosling\u2019s co-star in 2006\u2019s \u201cHalf Nelson,\u201d which earned Gosling an Oscar nomination for best actor. He starred alongside Jeremy Renner in 2008\u2019s \u201cThe Hurt Locker,\u201d which won best picture and earned Renner a best actor Oscar nom. Mackie played Martin Luther King Jr. to Bryan Cranston\u2019s Lyndon B. Johnson in the HBO movie \u201cAll the Way,\u201d for which Cranston was an Emmy nominee. And now Mackie appeared with Ron Howard in \u201cThe Studio.\u201d Only this time it wasn\u2019t just Howard who got an Emmy nomination but Mackie, too.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn various interviews over the years, Mackie has spoken publicly about his disappointment with awards bodies for overlooking his work. He told Esquire earlier this year on the \u201cCaptain America: Brave New World\u201d publicity tour: \u201cI know I\u2019ve done at least four performances that could have been nominated \u2014 if not for a Golden Globe, then an Oscar or an Emmy. Captain America is my Oscar, because I\u2019ve been overlooked so many times in my career.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking to Men\u2019s Health<\/a> in 2020, Mackie said he \u201cput everything\u201d into \u201cThe Hurt Locker\u201d and had to stop acting for a bit when the Oscars<\/a> snubbed him for supporting actor.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat little fucker matters,\u201d Mackie said at the time about the Oscar. \u201cWe try to protect ourselves and say, \u2018I\u2019m doing the work for the work.\u2019 But when that happened with \u2018Hurt Locker,\u2019 it hurt. I had to take a year off of work.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tMackie is one of four guest actors nominated for \u201cThe Studio.\u201d The others are Ron Howard, Bryan Cranston and Dave Franco. The Apple TV+ series earned a huge 23 nominations this year, making it the most-nominated freshman comedy in history. It\u2019s also now tied for most nominations for a single season of a comedy series.<\/p>\n
